Dwayne Johnson almost joined Marvel, before joining DC as Black Adam!
Now that Dwayne Johnson is all set to join DC and become a superhero himself, fans can’t wait to see him don the role of Black Adam. However, reports have revealed that things could have been very different. It turns out that Johnson had a chance to debut in Marvel instead of DC. But, he turned out to be the one star that Disney and Kevin Feige just couldn’t bag. And now we know why!
It was only a matter of time before Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson would join a superhero franchise. He just ticks all the boxes of being one. However, many were betting that it would instead be Marvel who would get his signature. After all, the clout and pull of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is immense. But, that’s not what ended up happening. It took a long while for Black Adam to be confirmed, and many thought it was because Marvel was trying to pull some strings. And that is exactly what Collider asked Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions producer Hiram Garcia. In the interview, Garcia revealed:
DJ and Kevin [Feige] have a great relationship and we’ve flirted around a few ideas before, but nothing serious. There’s a mutual admiration for what we each have been doing and what Kevin has built over there is truly incredible. Ultimately though for us, we’ve always been very committed to what we wanted to build with Black Adam. Black Adam was the character we wanted to bring to life and who we felt DJ was destined to play. Once we set our sites on this character over a decade ago it was hard to imagine DJ plaging anyone else.
Dwayne Johnson will shine in Black Adam, more so than in the MCU
In the end, Garcia specified that Johnson was kind of destined to be Black Adam. And he’s not wrong about that. Black Adam is a sort of villain-turned-antihero in the DC universe and Dwayne has been quite eager to take this role for himself. Moreover, in DC Johnson has more space to grow and become a prominent poster-boy for Warner Bros. After all, he’ll have to compete with the ghosts of Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, and their likes in the MCU, which isn’t ideal. With DC finally taking a more sensible route, Johnson can truly stamp his own name in a definitive manner in DC.
Right now, there is some time till we see Dwayne Johnson in a full DCEU costume. We’ve seen teasers of his Black Adam suit, but nothing that quenches our curiosity. Apart from Johnson, we’ll be seeing Pierce Brosnan, Sarah Shahi, Aldis Hodge, and several others under the helm of director Jaume Collet-Serra. This movie will change the power balance in DC, but we have to wait till next year to see it.
