It’s been two years since Martin Scorsese criticized Marvel films, which set the entire fandom on fire. It seems like Scorsese himself may have moved on from his words, but people involved in Marvel are not. That includes James Gunn, who has been involved with all three of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, including the upcoming one, and the upcoming DC movie Suicide Squad. In an interview that has since gone viral, Gunn has said that Scorsese only criticized Marvel movies because he wanted free press for his movies.
It all began in 2019 when Scorsese criticized Marvel films, saying that they’re “not cinema” and compared them to “theme parks”. Ever since then, many Marvel fans have been practically up in arms against Scorsese. And now, James Gunn, despite the passing of two years, still continues to lambast Scorsese. In an interview on the Happy. Sad. Confused. podcast, the hosts asked Gunn about Scorsese’s comments.
Gunn says Scorsese reprimanded Marvel to get free press which he wouldn’t normally get for his movies
Considering that Gun has been heavily involved in superhero films, both of DC and of Marvel, he naturally disagreed with Scorsese. In fact, he went a step further and said:
I just think it seems awful cynical that he would keep coming out against Marvel and then that is the only thing that would get him press for his movie… He’s creating his movie in the shadow of the Marvel films, and so he uses that to get attention for something he wasn’t getting as much attention as he wanted for it.
However, Gunn did not want to be presented as a hater or to be jealous of Scorsese in any way. So, he emphasized that he absolutely loves his movies, and even agrees with a lot that he said:
He’s one of the greatest filmmakers who’s ever existed. I love his movies. I can watch his movies with no problem. And he said a lot of things I agree with. There are a lot of things that are true about what he said.
Gunn then further talked about the state of cinema, agreeing with Scorsese and how “soulless” films are becoming more common because of the studios meddling with creators’ work. He continued:
There are a lot of heartless, soulless, spectacle films out there that don’t reflect what should be happening. I can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve talked to film directors before they went and made a big movie, and said, ‘Hey, we’re in this together, let’s do something different with these big movies. Let’s make them something different than everything that has come before them.’ And then see them cater to every single studio whim and be grossed out, frankly.
James Gunn clarifies his comments
That said, it’s been years since Scorsese made these comments. I know it seems difficult to believe, but the pandemic has kind of destroyed our perception of time. But, for some, it didn’t and they didn’t fail to highlight it on Twitter. And so, James Gunn had to somewhat clarify his words and say that he truly is a massive admirer of Scorsese. In a tweet, the filmmaker wrote:
Also for the record, Martin Scorsese is probably the world’s greatest living American filmmaker. I love & study his films & will continue to love & study his films. I disagree with him solely on one point: That films based on comic books are innately not cinema, that’s all.
So far, we have Scorsese’s Killers of the Moon Flower to look forward to, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, alongside Jesse Plemons, Lily Gladstone, and Robert De Niro. Due to the pandemic, we don’t have a release date for the movie yet. But, James Gunn is also working on multiple projects. This includes DC’s remake of Suicide Squad and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy 3.
