Billboard Names Ariana Grande Woman of the Year 2018
Without a doubt, singer and pop star Ariana Grande has been exceptionally amazing this year. She went through a lot of struggles, yet continued to release a series of widely successful songs. Moreover, she continued to show remarkable strength in the face of adversity. Recognizing her hard work and perseverance, Billboard crowned her the well-deserved title of 2018’s Woman of the Year.

She will receive the award at the Billboard event, ‘13th Annual Women in Music’, taking place on December 6 in New York City.
In a statement, here’s what Billboard vice president of content Ross Scarano said about Grande:
“Certain in her convictions, she consistently stands up for herself and her decisions in a world that often isn’t hospitable to that sort of strength in young women.”
“She’s got guts, she’s making some of the best music of her career, and she’s absolutely deserving of Woman of the Year.”
Ariana’s Successful Career
Over the course of her career, Grande has claimed the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart three times. Her latest chart-topper was her August album ‘Sweetener’, which included the hits ‘No Tears Left to Cry’ and ‘God Is a Woman’. Upon its release, ‘Sweetener’ ended up scoring the largest streaming week ever for a pop album by a female artist.
Then just recently, she released a new single called ‘Thank U, Next’ to hype up her new album. The song honors all her exes and depicts self-love and gratitude, not only for herself but also those around her. If anything, ‘Thank U, Next’ shows exactly why Billboard has titled her 2018’s Woman of the Year.
thank u for this honor @billboard 🖤

Grande’s Contributions to Noble Causes
Beyond music, Grande uses her platform and strength to support causes she believes in. She took part in ‘March for Our Lives’ earlier this year in support of smarter gun control laws. She’s also constantly advocating for mental health awareness, gender equality, LGBTQ rights and ‘Black Lives Matter’ on her social media accounts. Following the tragic Manchester Arena bombing outside her concert last year, Grande helped organize the ‘One Love Manchester’ benefit concert. The project raised more than $23 million to aid victims and their families.
By receiving the Billboard title, Ariana Grande joins a history of icons who have been previously honored as Woman of the Year. These include Selena Gomez, Madonna, Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift.
Selena Gomez, 2017 Woman of the Year
Last year’s Woman of the Year 2017 title went to Selena Gomez (with good reason) and Grande has closely followed. Selena had her own fair share of struggles in 2017, including her fight with Lupus disease. As a result of which, she raised more than $500,000 for the Lupus Research Alliance. Moreover, she also produced the Netflix series ‘13 Reasons Why’ and actively participated in UNICEF projects as one of the ambassadors.
It’s great to see that Billboard appreciates the young women of our generation. Women like Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez have fought hard against hardships but come out stronger. They have set high standards for the rest.
