Zendaya talks about Space Jam Lola Bunny Controversy
You might have heard about the Space Jam movie that was released a day ago. What you might not be aware of is that Zendaya was the voice of Lola Bunny’s character in the movie. Zendaya said that she did not know it was going to be at the center of some controversy.
Zendaya is undoubtedly a true fashion icon and a brilliant actress. We have seen her in many movies and shows. Euphoria is one of the shows she starred in and her character and acting in the show was on-point. Zendaya has always done marvelous work in her movies because of her good acting. Recently, Zendaya got the opportunity to be the voice of Lola Bunny in the new Space Jam: A New Legacy movie and she took it. As much as she was excited to be the voice of Lola, she was also a bit thrown by the controversy over the character’s updated look.
Zendaya talked about Space Jam Controversy
Zendaya gave an interview to Entertainment Weekly in which she talked about the ongoing controversy. She had no idea that any backlash would come out of the difference in Lola’s appearance compared to her version in the original film. She was actually very happy with Lola’s character and did not think people would criticize it. In her interview, she said laughingly:
I definitely know we love her, but I didn’t know it was going to be as much of a focus as it was. But I understand, because she’s a lovable character. She’s very important, so I get it. She’s special to a lot of people and their childhoods and they’ve been able to grow up with her, so I get that sense of protection.
Do you guys remember the 1996 Space Jam? If not, let me give you a little reminder. In the 1996 movie, Lola Bunny was seen wearing a crop top and short shorts in the film. But the 2021 version sees her don a basketball uniform more akin to that of her male counterparts.
About adopting the role of Lola
As we know everybody loves Lola Bunny because of her character. Our whole childhood we have seen her on our television, right? And we adore her for that as well as Zendaya. In her interview, she also said that Lola is very special to a lot of people and understands why they’re protective of her. People are over-protective when it comes to Lola as she is a major part of their entire childhood. And seeing her like this might create a lot of questions in people’s minds.
Zendaya made sure to add that she was just doing what the directors and producers told her to do so, relying on their ingenuity. She revealed in detailed how they approached her for the role and what she felt afterward:
When [producer Ryan Coogler] told me about this, I was like, ‘Whoa, this is a big deal’. They had already started that reimagining of what she was, and I guess there’s some spiritual connection between who Lola is in this film and maybe who Zendaya is, and maybe my voice would make sense for that new version of who she is. So I felt very lucky that they wanted to do that with me. And it was a nice small part, so there’s pressure for sure, but it could be worse – it could be all me. So there wasn’t too much weight on my shoulders. But it was a really special experience, and I just leaned on our incredible director Malcolm [D Lee] to take the lead and tell me what he wanted. And I really enjoyed myself.
