Nathalie Emmanuel addresses Missandei’s controversial death in Game of Thrones
Over the passage of multiple seasons, Nathalie Emmanuel and her character Missandei in Game of Thrones had gained quite a lot of love and following from the fans. They admired the kindness as well as the occasional wittiness that she displayed. However, her tragic end actually sparked a lot of outrage on social media. Now, after two years, Emmanuel is finally addressing her character’s controversial death.
After her first appearance in season 3, Emmanuel’s Missandei quickly gained favor with the mother of dragons, Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), and became a regular on the show. The fact that she was multi-lingual helped the Khaleesi a lot in Essos. Furthermore, her kind nature instantly made her a fan favorite. As a result, her tragic death at the hands of Cersei in Game of Thrones season 8 sparked a lot of outrage. Fans were livid against the showrunners, who were already out of favor with them. Now, years later, Emmanuel addresses that backlash.
Nathalie Emmanuel admits she did not expect there to be so much outrage over Missandei’s death
While talking to Vogue, Nathalie Emmanuel admitted that she did not expect there to be so much uproar over Missandei’s tragic death. She said:
When I learned that Missandei was going to die, I knew that, as the only woman of color on the show, I knew that people would feel her loss, like the loss of her, because she’s also just like a really kind, good character. I was not anticipating, I guess, the size of the reaction that happened. I think that really sparked a conversation about, when we make these shows in the future, when we are casting these shows, like, do we just have to have the one person – is there space for more of us? And I think the answer is yes, and I know the answer is yes.
Apart from the nature of her character, the fact that as a woman of color, Emmanuel managed to gain so much love from fans in one of the biggest TV shows in history means a lot to her. However, she also overcame a lot of other adversarial circumstances on the set, such as sexual harassment and inappropriate behavior. But, throughout that time, Clarke stood by her and helped her through those troubling times.
