Pete Davidson Cuts SNL Sketch, Not Talking to Ariana Grande?

It’s been a while since Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson broke off their engagement and ended their two-year long relationship. Just a few days ago, Ariana Grande dropped a new song called ‘Thank U, Next’ to promote her ‘Sweetener’ tour. In the song, she name-dropped Pete, saying she’s grateful for him but making it apparent that she’s moving on. As for Davidson, he’s had his own way of coping with the breakup; mainly humor.

Davidson Makes Proposal Joke in SNL Promo

Recently, the show ‘Saturday Night Live’ released a commercial promo for an episode. In the short ad, Davidson turned to musical guest Maggie Rogers and said,

“Hey Maggie, I’m Pete. Do you wanna get married?”

Now obviously the proposal was meant as a joke. But it was one which wasn’t taken well by Grande. In a now-deleted tweet, she hinted at how she wasn’t happy about it:

“For somebody who claims to hate relevancy u sure love clinging to it huh”.

Aside from that, she also tweeted “thank u, next” but at the time fans didn’t realize it was the title of a new song. The song had come as a surprise just half an hour before the SNL episode. However, unlike her previous tweet, all she expresses in the song is respect and gratitude for him (and her other exes, including rapper Mac Miller who recently died).

About Davidson, she sings:

“Even almost got married…And for Pete I’m so thankful.”

But anyway, it was soon after her tweets that word got to Pete about how Grande was upset. As a result, he got Lorne Michaels’s permission to back off on the initial sketch he had written for Saturday’s episode.

Davidson Cuts Out Jokes, Talks about Breakup

Instead of that, Davidson addressed his breakup with Ariana more seriously. He talked about it during the show’s segment, ‘Weekend Update’, and this time there were no jokes.

“I know some of you are curious about the breakup, but the truth is, it’s nobody’s business, sometimes things just don’t work out and that’s OK.”

He also went on to say some pretty nice things about her:

“She’s a wonderful, strong person and I genuinely wish her all the happiness in the world.”

At first, Davidson appeared on ‘Weekend Update’ to give his impressions on various politicians running for office. The first reference to Grande was a vague one. Davidson said that he’d been paying more attention to politics ever since “I had to move back in with my mom.” Previously, he and Grande had moved into a $16 million apartment together.

Throughout the segment, he made jokes about various politician’s appearances – such as saying that Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., looks like “if a cigar came to life” – and didn’t mention Ariana until the very end of his appearance. But this time, he simply wished his ex the best. It was similar to how Grande wishes him the best in ‘Thank U, Next’.

Davidson’s Previous Jokes About Breakup

This isn’t the first time Pete has opened up about their breakup. Just a couple of weeks ago, he took to the stage at a comedy show in LA, and told the audience: “Well, as you could tell, I don’t want to be here. There’s a lot going on” in reference to his public split with Ariana. Then, he made fun of the fact that he had to move out of her apartment: “Does anyone have any open rooms?” he continued. “Looking for a roommate?”

He also talked about all the tattoos he got in relation to Ariana.

“Um, I’ve been covering a bunch of tattoos, that’s fun. I’m f*cking 0 for 2 in the tattoo [department]. Yeah, I’m afraid to get my mum tattooed on me, that’s how bad it is.

“So, obviously you know [we] broke up or whatever but when me and her first got engaged we got tattoos. And it was in a magazine like, ‘Was Pete Davidson stupid?’ And 93% of it said yes. So my boy, he was like, ‘Don’t listen to that shit man. They’re literally fucking haters.’ And I’m like, yeah, fuck that. I’m not stupid.

“And the other day we were in my kitchen and he was like, ‘Yo bro. Turns out you were stupid.’”

Ariana and Pete Not in Touch Anymore?

All of Pete’s humor aside, it’s clear that Ariana and him are on good terms now. Although, it was recently reported to PEOPLE that they’re no longer in touch.

“They have no contact now and she keeps moving forward,” a source said.

“She seems very happy and positive. She isn’t talking about dating and is instead focused on work and herself,” the source continued.
