Elizabeth Olsen recalls ‘awful’ Game of Thrones Audition for Daenerys Targaryen
Today, we know Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff, also known as the formidable Scarlett Witch. And the actress earned that title due to her incredible performance across several MCU films and her own show, WandaVision. However, if things had gone differently, she could have been famous in Game of Thrones as Daenerys Targaryen instead.
Imagine Elizabeth Olsen as the Khaleesi….
While talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Olsen revealed that before joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she actually auditioned for the role of Daenerys Targaryen in HBO’s Game of Thrones. During the interview, she recalled her Gam of Thrones audition and explained why she believes she lost the role to the eventual Khaleesi, Emilia Clarke. Olsen recalled:
Yes, I auditioned for Game of Thrones. I auditioned for, like, the assistant to the casting director in a small room in New York with just a camera on me and them reading the script.
At the audition, Elizabeth Olsen revealed that she read the iconic Khaleesi speech when Daenerys emerged out of the pyre. Sadly for Olsen, her performance was nowhere near as good to land her the role, as she recalled:
I was doing the Khaleesi speech when she comes out of the fire. It was awful. I didn’t get a callback.
Ultimately, the role went to Emilia Clarke instead of Olsen and the rest, as they say, is history. Clarke ended up bagging four Emmy Award nominations. On the other hand, Olsen didn’t exactly struggle for long in Hollywood, as she ended up becoming the iconic Scarlett Witch and even bagging her own Disney+ show. So, in the end, both actresses got fame as well as success.
That said, working on Game of Thrones was not a piece of cake for everyone. One actress who played the role of Daenerys before Clarke was Tamzin Merchant. And her ordeal on the show was quite horrific, as she had to endure an uncomfortable episode on her version of the pilot. We don’t know if Olsen went through something similar, however.
