Streaming giants Netflix just seems to get bigger and bigger with each passing day. Now, the service has managed to bag a huge Hollywood director that will help them significantly improve their credibility. And it is none other than Steven Spielberg. Spielberg’s Amblin Partners has forged a partnership with Netflix and will now produce multiple feature films for the service every year.
Production deals are common in Hollywood, however, this one has a special ring to it. This is because it again signifies the change in dynamic within Hollywood in favor of streaming services. Netflix has changed the way people interact with movies and now has inspired other giants like Disney and Warner Bros. to try their hand at streaming as well. And with Spielberg on their side, they have one of the biggest names that the industry has ever seen.
Steven Spielberg delighted with Netflix deal
Steven Spielberg is probably the most successful director that the industry has ever produced. The movies under his enormous belt include Schindler’s List, E.T., the first four Indiana Jones films, Jurassic Park, Back to the Future trilogy, Jaws, and many more. The list is literally endless when it comes to Spielberg. And to have a creator of that caliber on their side speaks volumes about the strides that Netflix has taken. In his official statement, Spielberg was jovial about the deal, saying:
At Amblin, storytelling will forever be at the center of everything we do, and from the minute Ted and I started discussing a partnership, it was abundantly clear that we had an amazing opportunity to tell new stories together and reach audiences in new ways. This new avenue for our films, alongside the stories we continue to tell with our longtime family at Universal and our other partners, will be incredibly fulfilling for me personally since we get to embark on it together with Ted, and I can’t wait to get started with him, Scott, and the entire Netflix team.
However, despite this deal, Spielberg seems adamant about his support for the big screen as well as the small one. In 2019, he told The New York Times:
I want people to find their entertainment in any form or fashion that suits them. Big screen, small screen — what really matters to me is a great story and everyone should have access to great stories.
Moreover, Netflix is just as thrilled about this partnership. Netflix co-CEO and chief content officer Ted Sarandos saying:
Steven (Spielberg) is a creative visionary and leader and, like so many others around the world, my growing up was shaped by his memorable characters and stories that have been enduring, inspiring, and awakening. We cannot wait to get to work with the Amblin team and we are honored and thrilled to be part of this chapter of Steven’s cinematic history.
