Arnold Schwarzenegger says his kids didn’t like his Politics career
There are few professionals who have had a career as lucrative as Arnold Schwarzenegger. After starting off as a body-builder, he ventured into acting and became one of the most famous names in Hollywood and across the world. But, he wasn’t done yet, as the actor had a stint in politics as the Governor of California. However, he recently revealed in an interview that his children preferred his career in acting compared to his career in politics.
Family preferred my acting career over my political career, says Arnold Schwarzenegger
The former Governor recently appeared on his daughter Katherine Schwarzenegger’s Instagram show, Before, During, and After Baby. There, he revealed that his entire family – his ex-wife Maria Shriver and four children – were not happy with his job in politics. This was partly because the family then had to shift to Sacramento, CA. In fact, the family preferred him on a movie set. On the IGTV show, Schwarzenegger said:
First of all, I think it is very important to let everyone know how much you kids hated my job. It was one of those kind of odd things where I just thought that: ‘Oh, my kids will be so proud of me being governor now,’ and all this stuff, but I don’t think that you guys really kind of connected with that. I think you were so used to what we were doing when I was on a movie set.
Schwarzenegger was the governor of California from 2003 to 2011. And the reason that he gave for choosing this career path was that he “had this fixation about fixing the state and making the state better. And so that’s why I ran from one moment to the other when there was a recall”. But, his children did not share the same enthusiasm. The Terminator star told his daughter:
When you went to Sacramento, I remember you saying, ‘Dad, I hate your job’. And I said, ‘Why do you hate my job?’ and you said, ‘Everyone around here is running around in a stupid black suit and a tie and you all look so serious. It was much more fun on a movie set… Why did you take us out of this fun? Why did you change?’
Despite difficulties, his kids had a normal childhood
“Valid question!” was his daughter’s response. However, Katherine Schwarzenegger revealed that the family “had a very normal childhood, despite what people may think”. And Arnold Schwarzenegger nodded, saying:
We made an unbelievable attempt to make you guys grow up normal. I give your mother the credit for that because she grew up privileged… She knew how to safeguard and protect you all.
Other lessons from parenthood
Other than talking about his tenure in the Governor’s House, Arnold Schwarzenegger also talked about parenthood. What fascinated him was how each of his children become entirely different human beings, saying “each of you was so different”. He continued saying that he and Shriver had to adjust according to the needs of each of his four children. However, he still gives primary credit for his children’s upbringing to ex-wife Shriver, as he was occupied with work. Schwarzenegger said:
I have to take Father’s Day with a grain of salt, because I think the majority of time, children are spending with their mothers. When I think back on raising you kids, I was on a movie set a lot of the times. I was trying to make a living and make a lot of money for the family, (and was only present) 20, 30 percent of the time.
