Tom Hiddleston happy with gender fluid identity of Loki
Loki actor Tom Hiddleston is delighted at the gender fluidity of his Marvel character. In the first episode of his new Disney+ Loki series, Marvel clarified once and for all that indeed the God of Mischief’s gender is fluid. That settled a long debate on the character’s gender, which was already clear in the comics as well.
It has been long canon in the comics that Loki indeed is gender fluid. However, it was a long-standing debate among Marvel fans if that was the case with the MCU. Now, with the opening episode of the character’s own TV series, it’s been confirmed. The Time Variance Authority’s (TVA) file on Loki clearly stated that his gender was “FLUID”. And Hiddleston was particularly happy about it, as he told Reuters:
It’s always been there in the mythology. It’s been there in the comics as long as I think the run of publishing within Marvel has over sixty-plus years.
Moreover, Hiddleston stated that the mercurialness of Loki really intrigues him and makes playing the character all the more fun. And his gender identity further plays into the nature of the character, as the actor stated:
Loki, as a character, has had such a broad and wide-ranging identity. He’s always been a character you could never put in a box, you could never pin down. I was really pleased with the touch on that in the series.
Hiddleston’s favorite Loki episode?
As far as the actor’s favorite episode of the TV series is concerned, he was quite diplomatic about the answer.
It’s a tough one. They’re all so different, which I love about it. And every episode is almost a self-contained story, partly to do with the brilliance of everybody involved – not me, but Owen Wilson, [writer] Kate Herron and cast members I’m afraid I cannot yet name for you, but wait and see.
For now, even fans can’t pin point their favorite episode as there have been just two released as of yet. But, over the weeks as the show begins to take better shape, we’ll know for sure.
