Time for some great news-The Color Purple is headed for the big screens another time. But this latest edition would be a musical. Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey are developing the movie musical from Warner Bros. The Color Purple will be back on the screens after 36 years. But this new movie iteration still does not have any defined cast, director, or writers. However, with the team that’s already in on the project, we are surely in for a great experience.

‘The Color Purple’ To Return

36 years after the Alice Walker’s novel The Color Purple came out, it is going to hit the screens as a musical. Previously, it was adapted into a Broadway musical in 2005. This time, we’ll get to see it on the big screens. Along with Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg who directed the Oscar-nominated 1985 film adaptation of the novel is also returning for this movie. The 1985 version also received 11 Academy Award nominations but missed its chance at the Oscar.

The story of The Color Purple revolves around a black Southern woman who had to suffer abuse by her father and husband. Set in 20th century, in the Spielberg movie, Whoopi Goldberg played Celie and received an Oscar nomination for it. Oprah Winfrey received one too, and made her feature acting debut. However, Spielberg did not receive one for his directing but won a Directors Guild of America Award for outstanding directorial achievement. Nonetheless, the movie did great at the Box Office securing $140 million worldwide on a $15 million budget.

The Color Purple musical which earned 11 Tony nominations had music and lyrics by Stephen Bray, Brenda Russell and Alee Willis. Although the new movie iteration is in development, we are not sure about the cast. Nor do we know much about the writers and directors.

Let’s see what surprises are we in for!
