Iggy Azalea Parts Ways with Island Records: ‘I’m Officially Unsigned’

Iggy Azalea, like most rappers these days, is subject to a lot of controversy (such as her dating life). Not any more than Nicki Minaj or Cardi B though (oops shouldn’t have said their names together) but still. Just earlier this year, Iggy Azalea left the label Def Jam for Island Records. But now it appears she’s leaving Island Records behind too.

Iggy Signs Off from Island Records

Just nine months after her shift to Island Records, Iggy revealed on Saturday (Nov.3) that she and the label have parted ways. In a tweet, she stated that she’s “officially unsigned”, seemingly more than satisfied with her decision. It’s obvious that Azalea’s thrilled about her new-found independence as a song-writer.

She took to Twitter to write:

“Wild you spend so long trying to get IN a record deal…never thought I’d be so elated to be OUT of one. Now I’m free to release whatever kinda music I like, whenever I’d like woooo!”

When New Music Can be Expected

Despite her excitement, Azalea also clarified that she won’t release any new music this year. She added:

“I don’t want to jump the gun and have some messy era aesthetically.”

Iggy released her debut studio album, ‘The New Classic’, in 2014. It included hit singles that we’re all fairly familiar with. ‘Work’, ‘Black Widow’ with Rita Ora, and ‘Fancy’ featuring Charli XCX are to name a few. The project was widely successful, topping Billboard charts and receiving several Grammy awards, as well as platinum certification.

However, the follow-up album, ‘Digital Distortion’, that Azalea meant to release is yet to come. The years-long delay was reportedly a significant factor in Iggy’s decision to join Island Records. She probably thought the label would do good for her career.

Why Azalea Left Island Records

But the move didn’t change a lot for her. In other words, it didn’t help her progress any more than the previous label. In a now-deleted tweet this week, she said she loves Island Records but doesn’t want to be associated with a label:

“I want to be my own boss. I feel I would be better off if I could make my own timeline etc choices and I have the funds to do it.”

So Iggy got her wish. But she has told fans that they’ll have to wait a while before getting any new music. Check out her tweets below.
