Just like many things in life, Bill Gates‘s divorce did not happen overnight. According to recent reports, Melinda Gates had been seeking a divorce from her husband for 27 years since 2019. And one of the reasons for that was primarily Bill’s connection to the convicted sex offender and trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Melinda was having talks with divorce attorneys way back since 2019. Before divorce talks, she had discussions with multiple firms to fix an “irretrievably broken” marriage. The couple has not yet revealed officially the reason for their separation. However, WSJ believes that Melinda was upset over Bill’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein – a convicted sex trafficker and sex offender.

Sources told the WSJ that Bill’s friendship with Epstein “still haunts” Melinda Gates. Furthermore, Epstein’s sexual misconduct was public since 2008 when he pleaded guilty to soliciting an underage girl. Melinda and Bill Gates first met Jeffrey Epstein at his Upper East Side mansion in September 2013. And since then, Melinda told her close friends about the discomfort she felt during their encounter. As a result, Melinda was “furious” over Bill’s continued relationship with Epstein. And New York Times reported that meeting with Epstein publicly in 2019.

In their official announcement on May 3, however, Bill and Melinda Gates released a joint statement that didn’t highlight the reason behind the divorce. It said:

Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives. We continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue our work together at the foundation, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in the next phase of our lives. We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life.

Even though the news of the split rocked the world of philanthropy and the tech communities, it was evident that Bill Gates’s divorce will not affect the Gates Foundation in any way.
