Zack Snyder’s alternate title for ‘Batman v Superman’ was hilarious
Batman v Superman was quite a unique endeavor at the time of its release. For the first time, fans were seeing two of the most popular superheroes go against each other in a blockbuster movie. To remind you, BvS made its debut 2 months before Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War, so DC did do it first. Although it was subject to more criticism than its Marvel counterpart. Now, it turns out, that naming the movie was quite a difficult task for Zack Snyder, as he and Chris Terrio played around quite a lot with the movie’s name. And the first name that they arrived on was quite hilarious, to say the least.
Zack Snyder had a hilarious name in mind for Batman V Superman
During the Justice Con 2021, Zack Snyder revealed that while discussing the movie’s title, one Warner Bros. executive was absolutely adamant on ‘Batman versus Superman’. They weren’t even willing to shorten the name, as Snyder said “The whole ‘v’ instead of ‘versus,’ it was like this crazy negotiation”.
However, Zack Snyder being the creative man that he is, wanted something a bit more poetic. He suggested something like “Son of Sun and Knight of Night”. Yes, that is not made up and these are Snyder’s own words. Needless to say, the studio simply said “Absolutely not,” according to the director.
On the other hand, Chris Terrio had slightly better ideas than Zack Snyder. He suggested that there should be an obvious connection between Batman v Superman and Justice League. Therefore, he thought:
For a while, we talked about actually titling it ‘Justice League: [Subtitle],’ to suggest that this movie was going to be the beginning of the Justice League, even though it didn’t really look like it. Like ‘Justice League: Foundations,’ or ‘Justice League: Rising.’
At first glance, it does sound great. However, Batman v Superman was an entirely different movie on its own. It had a completely different conflict at its heart, which was significantly different from a Justice League movie. By naming it Justice League, it would have completely diverted attention away from the monumental conflict between Batman (Ben Affleck) and Superman (Henry Cavill). And that would have disappointed fans in the end, who would have had greater expectations. What do you think of Zack Snyder’s initially proposed name? Let us know in the comments below.
