White Plains Hospital extends its deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Simmons, as well as his friends and legions of fans who expressed their unwavering support during this difficult time. Earl Simmons passed away peacefully with family present after suffering a catastrophic cardiac arrest.

DMX was hospitalized on April 2nd after suffering a severe heart attack and was in grave condition. After being admitted, his condition was so severe that he had to be resuscitated and put on life support. At one point, he was without oxygen for almost 30 minutes. However, his lawyer did not know the reason for the heart attack. On Monday, fans also held a prayer vigil outside of his hospital where he was on life support.

History of drug addiction

DMX rose to fame in the 90s. However, the rapper had a problem of substance abuse after an adult introduced him to the world of drugs. While talking to Talib Kweli, the rapper admitted that he looked up to this person, but he broke his trust, saying:

I loved this guy like an older brother, I didn’t have any brothers. I would beat box and he would rap, then he suggested one time, ‘Why don’t you write a couple rhymes and I’ll beat box for you?’ …. That’s where my first rhyme came to me. But this guy … He introduced me to what would be the best part of my life, which would be the rap, but he also [introduced me to drugs]. The thing with my life, it’s blessed with a curse and the curse aspect of it was —

Like I said, I didn’t smoke cigarettes, I didn’t smoke weed. I didn’t do anything, I was 14 years old, I never felt like this before. I later found out that he laced the [cannabis] with crack. Why would you do that to a child? He was like 30 and he knew how I looked up to him. … Why would you do that to somebody who looks up to you?

DMX in an interview

Afterward, DMX had to undergo numerous rehabilitation periods, as this experience changed his life for the worse. The rapper continued:

A monster was born. I wouldn’t do that to my worst enemy, I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy, especially to someone that you supposedly love … I put that in a song called ‘Pain’ … He acted like he loved me.

Rumors before the confirmation of his death

Before the confirmation of DMX’s death, however, there were a series of rumors floating around the internet. Unconfirmed news spread around the internet early on April 9th that the rapper had passed away, with numerous accounts, some even verified, posting their tributes on Twitter:

However, later on it was confirmed by DMX’s manager in a video message that the rapper is indeed alive, but still on life support. He insisted everyone to take down their “RIP DMX” tweets out of respect for the family:

This gave the fans some renewed hope

However, all that hope soon faded away as the rapper’s family confirmed that DMX died. Afterward, a series of heartfelt tributes for the rapper flooded Twitter:
