Hailey Bieber opens up about how hard it was to be compared to other women
Recently, Hailey Bieber talked about how her mental health was affected by being compared to other women. It’s one of the main reasons why she left Twitter permanently and limits her time on Instagram as well.
Hailey Bieber was constantly compared to other women, especially in terms of appearance
She opened up about how social media affected her mental health on her YouTube Channel. Hailey Bieber brought on a special guest, a psychiatrist Dr. Jessica Clemons where they had a candid conversation about how social media can lead to depression and other negative emotions.
When in the spotlight, Hailey would often be judged on her body, her face, her behavior and everything about her. There would be comparisons between other successful women in the industry constantly that definitely put a toll on her mental health.
“After getting married especially, it really opened me up to this new kind of level of attention. I think one of the biggest things I struggled with for sure was the comparison aspect of body comparison, looks comparison, behaviour comparison.”
She elaborated on how it really affects someone’s mental state when they’re being told the same thing over and over again and compared to other people.
The constant negativity can lead someone to question their own self and lead to insecurities.
“I think when you’re going through a situation where you just have so many people hounding you with the same thing over and over and over again. It starts to mess with your mind. And then you start to question everything. You’re like, ‘Is there something that I’m not seeing that they see?. Maybe they’re right.’ It got to such a low point for me that I was like, ‘Honestly, maybe I’m delusional.’ It’s like separating two realities essentially.”
Hailey Rhode Bieber also shared some steps she took to take control of her mental health. She limited her time on Instagram and she does not open it on weekdays. Moreover, she put a limitation on who can comment on her pictures. Those only approved by her (who she knows will only have something positive to say) can comment on her Instagram pictures.
She also explained how she minimized her time on social media
She’s also completely left Twitter as she found it to be quite toxic, adding that even opening the app was starting to give her anxiety. Hailey Bieber also added that she was learning how to understand that she doesn’t owe an explanation to anyone. Even though she wants to be liked by everyone. The 24-year-old model was learning that it’s okay if someone doesn’t always like you.
Further, she highlighted how Justin Bieber and therapy had really helped her navigate this difficult landscape of social media after gaining more recognition. Hailey also added that she always prefers solving things and working on herself behind closed doors and not documenting everything online.
Many believe that Hailey was talking about being compared to Selena Gomez
Hailey Bieber didn’t explicitly name Selena Gomez as someone who she was compared to. But she did say she was compared a lot during the last two years or so. That’s the time when she started a serious relationship with Justin Bieber and married him.
During this time, much of the public world have compared Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber together. Selena Gomez is Justin Bieber’s ex-girlfriend and their relationship was widely talked about on news outlets and gossip magazines. The comparison between the women started right after Justin started dating Hailey. Unfortunately, it became a toxic and negative comparison where two women were pitted against each other by the fans.
The situation got increasingly worse which led Justin Bieber, Hailey Bieber, and even Selena Gomez to speak out against it.
Selena Gomez, Hailey and Justin Bieber have all asked the fans to be kind and not send hate to anyone
There was one fan who was telling others to send hate to Hailey Bieber and comment that “Selena is better” when she and Justin Bieber were on an Instagram live stream. Justin Bieber responded to that video and said that person “was a sad excuse for a human”. He also shared that he and Hailey often had to see such hate online targeted towards them.
Hailey Bieber also added in saying it was “shockingly unhealthy and sad” to see people have such an intense level of hate and anger. Moreover, she shared that she only wants to support other women in the industry:
“I want only to support, uplift, and encourage other women in this industry and wish them nothing but love and success.”
And when Selena Gomez released her song ‘Lose you to Love me’, many thought that it was about her relationship with Justin Bieber. It also led to a lot of hate targeted at Hailey Bieber too.
Gomez was quick to call this out and shared:
“I am grateful for the response that the song is getting. I’m so grateful. However, I do not stand for women tearing women down and I will never, ever be by that. Please be kind to everyone. It doesn’t matter what the situation is; if you’re my fans, don’t be rude to anybody, please. Don’t go off and say things that you just feel in the moment.”
