Nia Comes out as Transgender in Supergirl
The fourth season of Supergirl came on television this month. It has some great surprises to offer. On last week’s episode, the cultural climate of the city was already filled with waves of anti-alien sentiments. And just then, Nia Nal came out as a transgender woman. Amidst the reactions of all other characters, she spoke her truth. And believe it or not, this was an incredibly significant step for not just her character. But also, the show as a whole. Nia coming out as a transgender woman is an important part of her being a superhero.
Why Is Nia Coming Out Important?
The character of Nia Nal is played by Nicole Maines-a transgender woman from Maine. The executive producer of Supergirl, Robert Rovner has himself broken down the episode to describe why Nia coming out will prove to be important.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he said that it was important for Nia to speak the truth. And Nia spoke the truth to James Olsen because it was relevant to the position she was trying to articulate. He further talked about their relationship saying that,
It’s great that we have James really taking control of CatCo in a stronger way this year. As Kara [Melissa Benoist] is a mentor to Nia, so is James.
As per Rovner, this entire season of Supergirl is aimed at exploring what is happening in the country. And how Supergirl deals with all these divides. Her character is thought of someone who can combat hate. And that this time they are exploring all sides of the issue. It might seem political but all she speaks about is how everyone should treat each other with kindness. A lot many things divide people but Supergirl is searching for a way to unite everybody.
Basically, this week’s episode for doing the ground work for when Nia will become the first transgender superhero. But what’s even more important is a transgender woman speaking her human story.
