It isn’t unheard of for actors to take a shot at politics. And now, Matthew McConaughey is also considering his own shot at the office of the Governor of Texas. In a recent interview, the Interstellar actor expressed that he’s thinking of giving it a try.

While talking on The Balanced Voice podcast, McConaughey told the host Rania Mankarious that for him, running for governor is a “true consideration”. And by his words, it seems like McConaughey is trying to figure out the principles he will stand on as a leader.

I’m looking into now again, what is my leadership role? Because I do think I have some things to teach and share, and what is my role? What’s my category in my next chapter of life that I’m going into?
And this isn’t the first time Matthew McConaughey has mentioned a run for governor of Texas. Back in November, McConaughey went to The Hugh Hewitt Show, where the host asked him the same thing. Then, however, McConaughey wasn’t sure and said:
I don’t know. I mean, that wouldn’t be up to me. It would be up to the people more than it would me. Look, politics seems to be a broken business to me right now. And when politics redefines its purpose, I could be a hell of a lot more interested.

It looks like there has been some development that has caused Matthew McConaughey to seriously consider running for Governor. It could be at a personal level, but it could also be because of a change in the political landscape in the United States with Donald Trump no longer the President.

Furthermore, there’s a rich history of Hollywood actors and celebrities going after public office. The biggest examples of these are Ronald Reagan, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Donald Trump himself. However, we’re not certain which political party’s ticket will Matthew McConaughey try aim for – the Democrats or The Republicans. Regardless of his preferred party, he’ll be facing Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who is up for re-election next year.

His political stances

As far as his political views are concerned, it’s not clear which side of the political spectrum McConaughey relates to. However, there are some past comments he made on “Defund the Police” and gun control, which portray him as a centrist. He said:

It’s almost like it should have been renamed because ‘defund’ does not sound anything like there’s been money reallocated to different areas of handling some police exercise. The community and the police need to get back together, and the community needs to say, ‘Here’s what’s unfair. Here’s how I feel it’s unfair as a Black man or a person of color or whatever the situation. Here’s my problem with my relationship with you as cops.

McConaughey himself has said his life’s motto has always been to meet in the middle and compromise, as the Dallas Buyer’s Club actor said:

The two sides got to talk. Hey, where can we reach across the aisle here? Find a compromise for the betterment of all of us?
