For every actor, a role in Star Wars is something to die for. After all, it gives one a lifetime of success and fame, considering the humungous fanbase of the franchise. But, Benedict Cumberbatch begs to differ. The Doctor Strange actor seems to not be interested at all in joining the Star Wars franchise, and here’s why.
Benedict Cumberbatch does not want to be a part of a galaxy far far away
As of now, there hasn’t been any official communication between Cumberbatch and Lucasfilm. But, there are a bunch of eager fans who want to see Cumberbatch don the role of the villain Grand Admiral Thrawn. Thrawn is a blue-skinned Chiss, who gained control of what was left behind after the destruction of the Empire. This happened before the rise of the First Order and fans are expecting to see Thrawn in the upcoming Disney+ show about Ahsoka Tano, after being mentioned in The Mandalorian season 2.
For fans, it seemed like Benedict Cumberbatch was the ideal guy to play this role. However, all the hopes of fans expecting to see Cumberbatch in Star Wars were crushed in his recent interview with Collider. The Sherlock actor was not going to wear blue makeup every day to play Thrawn, and wants to focus on his family, saying:
That’s a straight no from me, right now. There’s no way I want to be turned blue. I turned the air blue, very recently. No no, seriously, I have precious time with my children and I think sitting in a make-up chair and being painted blue, and the amount of time it would take to do that and then take it off at the end of the day might just… it’s not the right time in my life for that.
And in all honesty, Benedict Cumberbatch has no incentive to join Star Wars. He has more fame than most actors can dream of, with his roles of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Strange. There isn’t much he’ll gain by becoming a blue-faced alien. Therefore, fans have to move on from Cumberbatch and focus on the next guy on their list of actors ready to play Thrawn.
