2020 has been a difficult year for the film industry. The pandemic took a massive toll on every major studio, which ended up delaying their big releases. And MCU’s Black Widow was one of them as well. There were chances that it would be delayed again, but it seems like Marvel and Disney are now planning a Black Widow release in summer.

With the delay of Fast 9: The Fast Saga, many were expecting Marvel would delay the Black Widow release. Scarlett Johansson has had to wait quite a while for her own special place in the MCU. And it seemed like she may have to wait a bit longer. But, it looks like Disney is willing to give Johansson her send off this summer. They’re doing so in light of the roll out of the COVID vaccinations, as cities begin to open up with more shots being administered.

The current release date for Black Widow is May 7th. Disney CEO Dave Chapek said in his recent final earning call to the shareholders. He emphasized on the importance of Black Widow’s release, along with that of Raya and the Last Dragon. Chapek said:

I hope you’ve all had an opportunity to see our latest family entertainment achievement, Disney Animation Studios Raya and the Last Dragon which we released last week in theaters and on Disney+ premiere access to great acclaim and social buzz. As we’ve said we believe it’s important to put the consumer in charge and let them decide how they want to enjoy our films particularly as we navigate through the pandemic. We are really excited about the full slate of films we have in store. Next up is Black Widow, currently sent for release in theaters on May 7.

We’re not sure if this will happen or not. But, with the vaccine roll out and the film industry desperate to bring people back to the theatres, there is a significant possibility for this to happen. And Chapek is adamant, as he continued:

As of now, the strategy is to continue on with the theatrical release. And we’ll be watching very, very carefully.

MCU fans would love nothing more but to see Natasha Romanoff back in action in the theatres. But, the situation is still open to change.
