Her abusive childhood

Born Onika Tanya Maraj, Minaj has described her father as violent towards her mother. While talking to The Rolling Stone magazine in 2010, Minaj said her father once set fire to their home while her mother was inside. Minaj said:

When I first came to America, I would go in my room and and kneel down at the foot of my bed and pray that God would make me rich so that I could take care of my mother. It’s the price you pay when you abuse drugs and alcohol. Maybe one day your daughter will be famous and talk to every magazine about it, so think about that, dads out there who want to be crazy.

Furthermore, in her 2018 documentary Queen, Nicki Minaj described that whenever her father would try to hit her mother, she would try to protect her by spreading her arms wide. She said:

I remember when my mother would let my father be violent with her and she always brings up this story about when I was a little girl and I would stand in front of my mother. That’s why maybe some people would describe me as abrasive or b**chy or whatever because I vowed from that age no man would ever abuse me, call me out my name, treat me like that. Then all of a sudden, that was my life.

Minaj has yet to comment on her 64-year-old father’s death.
