Jared Leto modeled his ‘Blade Runner 2049’ contact lenses after his Blind Performance Coach
Jared Leto always puts a lot of effort into his characters in movies. And when fans saw him as Niandar Wallace in Blade Runner 2049, they were left ecstatic. But, there was a lot of effort that went into it behind the scenes as well. For instance, his blind performance coach trained him for the role. And to honor him, Leto modeled his contact lenses in the movie after him.
Jared Leto explains his contact lenses in Blade Runner 2049
Recently, Jared Leto had a long chat with GQ in their “Iconic Characters” series. There, he addressed rumors that he used custom contact lenses to blind himself. However, it turns out that they had a more personal meaning to him, as Leto said:
I had a really wonderful teacher, a guy named Chris, who is blind. He’s an amazing coach. We actually modeled my eyes in the film after his eyes in real life. He’s just a really special person. There’s a lot of him in the physicality of that performance.
Furthermore, Leto also talked about his experience working with Harrison Ford on the film. On his very first day on set, he shot his big confrontation with Ford’s Rick Deckard. Leto recalled:
We finished up the scene. Long shoot day. Very intense…we did the scene a bunch of times. We’re finished up and they shuffled me off to the side, the AD did. I was standing there alone and someone comes up to me and wraps their arms around me and gives me this huge hug. A very emotional hug… it felt like there were tears flowing. It was Harrison Ford, it was a special and beautiful moment. I think that he went somewhere really special in that scene and I was so happy to be there with him as he was putting such great work on the screen.
Leto knows if Deckard was a Replicant or not!
Interestingly, Jared Leto is probably the only person on Earth who knows the answer to a big question that Blade Runner fans are not aware of – was Deckard a replicant? As to how he knows the answer to that, Leto responded:
There are two movies now where I know the answer and nobody else does. Denis [Villeneuve] told me on ‘Blade Runner’ that because I look inside of Harrison Ford’s mind, I’m the only one who knows if he is a replicant or not. So he said that I can decide, so I have that secret, and now on [‘The Little Things’] I have this secret to carry as well.
About the Joker
Finally, Jared Leto also addressed some crazy rumors that he gifted his co-star gruesome items. He said they were all false, saying:
It’s also interesting how this stuff all takes on a life of its own. I never gave Margot Robbie a dead rat. That’s not true. I actually gave her — I found this place in Toronto that had great vegan cinnamon buns, and that was a very common thing.
Despite the criticism, we will get to see Leto’s joker at least one last time in the upcoming Zack Snyder Cut of Justice League. We’ll have to wait until the 18th of March for its release.
