The Simpsons Killing Off Apu Amidst Racial Controversy
The Simpsons has decided to kill of the character of Apu after it got involved in a controversy. After months of debate, the producers are going to get rid of him altogether. Apu has been on the show for almost 30 years now. And also, fairly popular among the audience especially for his catchphrase, ‘Thank you, come again!’. But now that a documentary has argued that Apu negatively portrays migrants and Indian-Americans, The Simpsons have to get him off. Even when fans are greatly disappointed, the show producers feel this is their only choice. So, like it or not, Apu will soon be going to Heaven.
The Simpsons Killing Off Apu
One of the show producers has confirmed that Apu has to exit The Simpsons. Adi Shankar said that they were not going to make a big deal about this. But just for the sake of avoiding controversy, they will drop the character off. However, it is not like the show did not fight for Apu. Shankar made efforts to come up with a script that portrays Indians differently. He even made a sample episode with the winning script by doctor Vishaal Buch for YouTube, where Apu becomes a successful businessman in Springfield. But after that was rejected, The Simpsons decided to get him off for once.
Shankar still believes that this is going to be a mistake. He believes that this is neither a step forward or a step backward. Instead, it’s a step sideways. And that doing this will not solve the issue when the entire purpose of art is to bring us all together. He added that,
If you are a show about cultural commentary and you are too afraid to comment on the culture, especially when it’s a component of the culture you had a hand in creating, then you are a show about cowardice.
Criticism on Apu rose when a comedian Hari Kondabolu released a documentary- The Problem With Apu. And identified that the character and his thick Indian accent were based on hurtful stereotypes. In the documentary, South Asian heritage Americans comment on the portrayal of Indians. And believe that this often leads to bullying.
How Are People Reacting?
It’s safe to assume that nobody is really happy with this decision to take Apu off The Simpsons. Kondabolu himself agrees that this is not the right way. And tweeted that there were many other ways to make this work without getting rid of Apu.
British creator the popular BBC One comedy Citizen Khan-Adil Ray who himself has South Asian roots is unhappy with this. And blasted that this is the biggest joke that The Simpsons could make. He added that it was complete nonsense. And questioned what would it be for Asians who just loved Apu?
A source inside the Fox News has informed that Apu will definitely be going to Heaven. Apparently, this came when Apu appeared in the 10/14/18 episode My Way or the Highway to Heaven.
As tragic as it is, seems like it’s time for Apu to bid farewell to The Simpsons.
