Before parting ways with Warner Bros., Zack Snyder had no intention of including the Joker in the 2017 film. But, when the studios finally gave him a chance of finally making the infamous Snyder Cut, then he decided to add Batman’s arch-nemesis into the fold. For that, he took his sweet time in convincing Jared Leto for the role, telling Vanity Fair:

The Joker is really the only thing that I thought of in retrospect. But I will say that it was always my intention to bring Joker into that world.

Here are the pictures that Snyder shared with Vanity Fair:

Initially, Snyder wanted to bring Jared Leto into the fold for some later movies. But, circumstances meant otherwise. Now, his version of Justice League will be a standalone film, which is why he decided to bring Leto on board. And this version of Joker is quite different than the one from Suicide Squad. For instance, the face tattoos are gone. Moreover, he’s in a hospital gown instead of his flamboyant dressing and hairstyle from the 2016 film.

Snyder explains the scene of the Joker

By what Snyder has described, Leto will be in the scene as the Joker in Bruce Wayne’s (Ben Affleck) dream or psychic sequence, in a world destroyed after the alien tyrant Darkseid destroys Earth. Snyder said:

The cool thing about the scene is that it’s Joker talking directly to Batman about Batman. It’s Joker analyzing Batman about who he is and what he is. That’s the thing I also felt like fans deserved from the DC Universe. That is to say, the Jared Leto Joker and the Ben Affleck Batman, they never really got together. It seemed uncool to me that we would make it all the way through this incarnation of Batman and Joker without seeing them come together.

This also explains why Batman had the Joker card taped to his gun in Batman v Superman. Other than bringing Jared Leto back, Snyder also had Batman’s sidekick Robin in mind, saying:

I’d always wanted to explore the death of Robi. And if there ever was going to be a next movie, which, of course, there probably won’t be, I wanted to do a thing where in flashbacks we learn how Robin died, how Joker killed him and burned down Wayne Manor, and that whole thing that happened between he and Bruce.

He wanted to show:

how they became like this … how he hurt him in a way that no one has, really. Other than losing his parents, it was probably the most significant personal injury to his life.

What has the Joker been up to since 2016?

That was the purpose of the Joker in Justice League. And this kind of storytelling is on-brand for Zack Snyder’s films, especially in DC. We hope that Jared Leto is able to regain some dignity for this role, as he received a lot of criticism the last time. As for what has the Joker gone through since David Ayer’s film:

I would say that there’s been some water under the bridge. Who knows what’s happened. I don’t know if he’s wearing makeup, I don’t know what’s happening. It’s hard to say exactly.

The Snyder Cut is set for release on Thursday, 18th of March 2021 on HBO Max.
