The US House of Representatives has impeached President Donald Trump for “incitement of insurrection” for the role that he played in inciting the mob that stormed the US Capitol last week. And what’s incredible that for the first time in US History, a President has been impeached twice. It is the rarest honor that now belongs to Donald Trump because of his coup attempt.

The resolution that impeached Donald Trump passed by a vote of 232-197 on Wednesday afternoon. It clearly stated that Trump’s remarks prior to the US Capitol Riots incited the rioters. As she signed the article of Impeachment, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said:

Today, in a bipartisan way, the House demonstrated that no one is above the law – not even the President of the United States.

Pelosi further said that the article made it clear:

… that Donald Trump is a clear and present danger to our country.

Other than the 222 Democrats, 10 Republicans also joined hands with them to impeach Donald Trump. That made this impeachment a unique bipartisan response to Trump’s attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 US Presidential Elections.

The riot on the 6th of January left 5 people dead, including one police officer. It sent shockwaves in not only US politics, but all around the world with many World Leaders condemning the “coup”. As a result of the outrage, Democratic leaders were spurred to launch the article of impeachment and hold Donald Trump accountable for his role in the riots. Trump gave an inflammatory speech right as the House voted to certify the results of the elections.

Even though Donald Trump’s impeachment article clearly states how he incited violence,

I want to be very clear, I unequivocally condemn the violence that we saw last week. Violence and vandalism have absolutely no place in our country and no place in our movement.

There will be a Senate trial

The House also named managers that will prosecute the charges of insurrection leveled in the articles of impeachment against Donald Trump. And the trial will begin after the 20th of January when Joe Biden will take the oath of office. That is also when the Democrats regain control of the Senate. Senate Democratic leader and soon to be Majority leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement after the vote:

Make no mistake, there will be an impeachment trial in the United States Senate. There will be a vote on convicting the president for high crimes and misdemeanors. And if the president is convicted, there will be a vote on barring him from running again.

However, despite Donald Trump’s impeachment, current Senate majority leader Mitch McConnel said that the Senate will only take action after Biden is sworn in office:

It will best serve our nation if Congress and the executive branch spend the next seven days completely focused on facilitating a safe inauguration and an orderly transfer of power to the incoming Biden administration.

Some Republicans have started to distance themselves from the President. However, despite the articles of impeachment, there are still many who are defending Donald Trump. Republican Congressman Jim Jordan said:

In seven days, there will be a peaceful transfer of power just like there has been every other time in our country, but Democrats are gonna impeach President Trump again. This doesn’t unite the country.
