All new Warner Bros. Movies coming to HBO Max in 2021

Warner Bros. has shaken up the film industry once again. In light of the Coronavirus pandemic, they’ll be releasing their entire upcoming 2021 film slate on HBO Max. Moreover, they’ll also be releasing this year’s anticipated DC movie Wonder Woman 1984 on HBO Max as well by Christmas. This move by the studio has sent ripples throughout the industry. It is a massive adrenaline shot for the streaming service and somewhat bad news for cinemas. And we also have the release dates of all the HBO Max movies.

Warner Bros. has called this a “hybrid” strategy, however, it is only set to last for 2021. So far, there’s no confirmation if this will be a long term solution for the studio. The movies will be released on HBO Max as well as in theatres on the same date, with the movies leaving the streaming service after one month of release, after which it will only play in theatres. It is a “unique one-year plan,” however, many theatres and creators have their doubts about it.

Christopher Nolan and the theatres are furious at Warner Bros.

These movies will certainly give HBO Max a boost, but it could spell a death knell to hundreds of thousands of theatres, especially in the United States. AMC Theatres said in a public statement:

Clearly Warner Media intends to sacrifice a considerable portion of the profitability of its movie studio division, and that of its production partners and filmmakers, to subsidize its HBO Max start up. As for AMC, we will do all in our power to ensure that Warner does not do so at our expense. We will aggressively pursue economic terms that preserve our business.

Moreover, Christopher Nolan also expressed his reservations about the plan. He said Warner Bros.’s decision made no financial sense and he called HBO Max the “worst streaming service,” saying:

Some of our industry’s biggest filmmakers and most important movie stars went to bed the night before thinking they were working for the greatest movie studio and woke up to find out they were working for the worst streaming service.

Despite the resistance, Warner Bros. is going ahead with the plan. Movies like Suicide Squad 2 and The Matrix 4, which are expected to draw out large crowds, will also be released in the comforts of everyone’s sofa. So, here are the release dates for the 2021 HBO Max movies:

2021 HBO Max movies release date:

Mortal Kombat – Jan. 15

The Little Things – Jan. 29

Tom and Jerry – March 5

The Many Saints of Newark – March 12

Reminisce – April 16

Godzilla vs. Kong – May 21

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It – June 4

In the Heights – June 18

Space Jam: A New Legacy – July 16

Dune – Oct. 1

King Richard – Nov. 19

The Matrix 4 – Dec. 22

So, apart from the last four films, we know the release date of all the HBO Max movies. And of course, we have Wonder Woman 1984 set for release on December 25 of this year. However, we’re eager to see the greater ramifications of this decision by Warner Bros. It can determine the future of the industry in unprecedented times.
