Christopher Nolan Calls HBO Max the “Worst” & Criticizes Warner Bros. Streaming Plan

Christopher Nolan is arguably one of the biggest cinephiles ever known to man. He is one of those directors who want to preserve the sanctity of cinema. So much so that he even despises 3D technology, saying that he hates the dimness of the image. However, the director has now lashed out against streaming services as well, particularly HBO Max. He called it the “worst streaming service” and also criticized Warner Bros. for releasing their entire upcoming 2021 film slate on HBO Max, including Suicide Squad 2 and Matrix 4. Here’s what Nolan has to say.

While talking to The Hollywood Reporter, he lashed out at Warner Bros. for their decision. He has had a working relationship with the studios since 2002, starting with Insomnia, and said in the statement:

Some of our industry’s biggest filmmakers and most important movie stars went to bed the night before thinking they were working for the greatest movie studio and woke up to find out they were working for the worst streaming service.

Nolan further added Warner Bros. decision doesn’t make any financial sense either, saying:

Warner Bros. had an incredible machine for getting a filmmaker’s work out everywhere, both in theaters and in the home, and they are dismantling it as we speak. They don’t even understand what they’re losing. Their decision makes no economic sense, and even the most casual Wall Street investor can see the difference between disruption and dysfunction.

Many agents and creators seem to agree with him

These are quite strong words by Christopher Nolan. However, he is not the only one who shares grievances against Warner Bros. One top talent agent also agreed with Nolan, saying:

Warners has made a grave mistake. Never have this many people been this upset with one entity.

Moreover, this decision could result in backlash for Warner Bros. No one knows how producers, filmmakers, guilds, and even actors would react to it. With Nolan essentially registering his protest against Warner Bros., the situation doesn’t look good. One talent agent said:

Warners was the quintessentially talent-friendly, filmmaker-friendly studio. Now Warners isn’t the first place, second place or third place you want to go.

Another agent who represents many important talents at Warner Bros. said:

You had a decades-long legacy as being known as the most talent-friendly studio. Now you’ve gone from that to a studio that in starburst colors lit up a sign that says, ‘We don’t give a fu*ck about talent.’

Many people are alleging that Warner Bros. is mainly doing so to help HBO Max after a botched launch. The much-anticipated streaming service has only amassed a total of 8.6 million subscribers, despite the COVID-19 pandemic which saw Netflix and other services net a massive amount of subscribers. And as a result, they’re questioning Warner Bros.’s understanding of the market and the industry. What do you guys think? We know as viewers we only stand to benefit. But from a financial point of view, is Christopher Nolan making a valid point? Let us know in the comments below. Meanwhile, you can read the complete report here.
