The hype was real when Modern Family announced that it was going to kill-off one its pivotal characters. And now, quite predictably the long-running comedy has actually eliminated one of the dearest characters from the show. At the beginning of Wednesday’s special Halloween episode, Claire (Julie Bowen) gets an unexpected phone call from her stepfather informing her of her mom, DeDe’s (Shelley Long), death. Yes, Dede Pritchett is no more. What? You thought it was going to be from among the lead characters? Well, certainly not with those salaries.
A Trick By Modern Family To Elevate Ratings
This Modern Family character killing hype was an obvious jig by the creators to perk up the show’s ever falling numbers. The show’s previous season dropped off several hints like Jay talking to his son about the ultimate and undeniable reality of death. It also cited Claire’s health complications. But all that was just horse-playing to get the viewers to speculate about this impending tragedy, thus bringing in views. Much to the show’s co-creator Christopher Lloyd’s delight the strategy worked wonders. Practically, everyone who has seen at least a single season of the show tuned in Wednesday night to call off their anticipation.
Christopher Lloyd Did Not Live Up To His Promises
Earlier, Modern Family’s Christopher Lloyd had teased about the death of a “significant” character on the show. He said “We’re handling some bigger life events in this season,” he explained.
“We do deal with a death. It is certainly a topic that families have to deal with. And on television, it’s not easy to do because that’s a heavy subject. But at the same time, it would seem unusual for a family not to go through it.”
Additionally, Lyold also stated that apart from an inevitable death, the show may also see its final episode with this season. However, now building upon this experience we cannot really trust his words.
We Will Miss Jay’s Ex-wife DeDe For Sure
The ever delightful Shelley Long had made a total of six appearances on Modern Family. But, even with a dearth of appearances, DeDe had made an impact as the vain-yet-cheery ex-wife of Jay. Her death does create a void that gets fairly noticeable as the members of the extended family discuss her grievingly. Alex said,
“People said she was difficult. But she was an amazing woman who didn’t conform to what anyone wanted her to be.”
DeDe passed away peacefully in her hotel room. She died peacefully, with a graceful smile on her face. And of course, her hand clutched “ten pages of suggestions for the hotel staff” at the time she died. What a woman!
