Everyone was in a state of perpetual shock when the Grammys announced their nominations for the 2021 awards. Sadly, Abel Tesfaye, popularly known as The Weeknd, was also one of them. After not receiving a single nomination for the 2021 Grammys, he is calling the Grammys corrupt, and rightly so.

Everyone expected the Canadian singer to perform well at the Grammys, considering the success of his album After Hours. After Hours was the best selling album of the year by far. Moreover, the hit single Blinding Lights from the same album is the longest-running top 10 hit in US chart history. However, that was not enough for the Recording Academy to put The Weeknd’s name in any of the nominations at the 2021 Grammys. In response, The Weeknd tweeted:

The Grammys remain corrupt. You owe me, my fans and the industry transparency…

This happened despite The Weeknd performing well at other music awards. These include major award wins at the MTV VMAs and the American Music Awards. Moreover, Abel will also perform at next year’s half-time show at the Super Bowl.

The Recording Academy explains its decision

In response, the Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. said in a statement to Rolling Stone magazine:

We understand that the Weeknd is disappointed at not being nominated. I was surprised and can empathize with what he’s feeling… Unfortunately, every year, there are fewer nominations than the number of deserving artists…

However, according to an anonymous source, that was not the case as reported by Rolling Stone. According to the source, the Weeknd not getting any nomination at the 2021 Grammys was a result of a struggle because of Abel performing at the Super Bowl and the Grammys. The source said:

There was an ultimatum given resulting in a struggle over him also playing the Super Bowl that went on for some time and was eventually agreed upon that he would perform at both events… [The Recording Academy] had all these convos with the Weeknd team in the past month, and today on November 24th, the Weeknd had not one nomination and is now completely ignored by the Grammys.

Furthermore, The Weeknd also tweeted:

Collaboratively planning a performance for weeks to not being invited? In my opinion zero nominations = you’re not invited!

The Recording Academy also has beef with Justin Bieber

Sadly, the nominations disappointed artists other than The Weeknd as well. Despite his album Changes picking three nominations, Justin Bieber complained about the nominations as well. He believes that the Recording Academy miscategorized his album, saying in a lengthy Instagram post that it was “unmistakenly an R&B album”.

We’ll have to wait and see if the Grammys survive this controversy. That said, there’s no doubt that The Weeknd not receiving even a single nomination does put the credibility of the awards in serious jeopardy.
