Bill Gates doesn’t understand anti-maskers

There’s more than enough evidence to suggest that masks do prevent the spread of Coronavirus. The rate of spread of the virus shrinks wherever wearing masks are mandatory. Moreover, models estimate that the United States could save nearly 63,000 lives by the end of March by just wearing masks. However, there are many Americans who refuse to wear them as a political statement against science or for individual choice. And Bill Gates is unable to understand them.

The founder of Microsoft and world-renowned philanthropist recently talked to actress and comedian Rashida Jones on the first episode of their new podcast series, Bill Gates and Rashida Jones Ask Big Questions. While talking about anti-maskers, Gates said:

The idea that somebody is resisting wearing a mask, that is such a weird thing to me… What are these, like nudists? We ask you to wear pants. No American says, or very few Americans say, that that’s like some terrible thing.

And Jones agreed with Gates, saying:

If you want to get back to normal life any time sooner, wear a mask, or don’t wear a mask and stay at home. But to ask for both things sounds like you just want things to be better and they’re not, so you kind of just have to deal with what it is.

Furthermore, Bill Gates also said that masks will help more business to open up, saying:

The mask helps you open up more things.

Bill Gates also explains why doctors didn’t think masks would be important at the start of the pandemic

Right now, there might be a general consensus between all physicians regarding the importance of masks. But, that wasn’t the case with COVID-19 at the start of the pandemic. Experts based their recommendations on what they knew of other respiratory viruses, like the common cold and flu. In those cases, the virus would spread when people cough. However, in the case of the Coronavirus, it can jump between people who are merely talking.

Bill Gates gave the example of the common cold. If someone with a cold and not wearing a mask spent an hour in a room with a group of people, most of the people would remain healthy. However, if the same person had COVID-19, “a high percentage” of people would end up sick.

These unbelievable viral loads that you see with the coronavirus don’t occur with most of the other respiratory viruses… Our model of flu with coughing turned out to be wrong.

Moreover, Gates also revealed that COVID-19 had an unusual ability to spread through asymptomatic patients as well. People with a cold or flu are contagious because they’re not feeling well. However, people with COVID-19 can be feeling perfectly well but spreading the virus unknowingly. That is why wearing a mask is so crucial for everyone, regardless of the symptoms. And that is what makes anti-maskers so incomprehensible to Gates or anyone who understands science.

It’s overwhelmingly clear that the upside [of mask-wearing] is gigantic.
