In case you did not know, a new Netflix series about Selena Quintanilla’s life called, “Selena: The Series” is about to drop on Netflix on December 4th.
However, the producers of the series, Selena’s father, Abraham Quintanilla, and sister Suzette Quintanilla, along with Netflix are being sued over the creation of the series.
The $1 million lawsuit comes after the Selena show was completed and set for a release. According to court documents obtained by E! News, the lawsuit is filed by Selena movie producer, Moctesuma Esparza against late Selena’s father and sister, along with Netflix. In the lawsuit, Moctesuma claims that Abraham had signed a contract in which he agreed to give him the rights to Selena’s life stories in 1995.
He also claims that in the suit, three of them had discussed the creation of a series that will be based on Selena’s life in 1998. It would be a follow-up to the biopic starring Jennifer Lopez. However, these plans never became reality.
Since then, the Quintanillas decided to produce another show with Netflix called “Selena: The Series.”
The Whole Debate About The Singer’s Life Story Rights
According to Moctesuma, the creation of the series served as a breach of contract. Moreover, he also accused Netflix of ignoring his rights to Selena’s life stories.
However, Moctesuma had claimed something entirely different in an interview with The Los Angeles Times in 1995. He had stated that “he did not seek rights to Selena’s life story.” This was despite the fact that he had been involved in the production of the 1997 film.
According to the same interview, Moctesuma had come to an “informal agreement” with Selena’s family. They decided they would have final approval on the script while Moctesuma oversaw the production side of things.
However, in the lawsuit, Moctesuma says that the issue of the singer’s life story rights came up in 1998. At this point, they had already formalized their agreement.
