Cardi B Apologizes To Hindu Community For Cultural Appropriation

0 191

Cardi B is one female rapper who does not care what people say about her. She has always been real about things and does not shy away from sharing her opinion.

However, that same quality that we admire landed her in some deep trouble. Cardi B was photographed for Footwear News‘ November cover. She wore a red Georges Hobeika outfit while holding a red sneaker from her Reebok collab. But that’s not all. Eight more arms could be seen behind her, replicating the Hindu goddess Durga. Consequently, fans called her out for appropriating the Hindu religion.

To clarify her intentions, Cardi B took to Instagram Story on Tuesday night.

She said, “When I did the Reebok shoot, the creatives were telling me, ‘You gonna represent a goddess, that she represents strength, femininity and liberation.’ And that’s something that I love and I’m all about.”

Cardi B continued saying she thought it was dope. But if people got the impression that she is offending their culture or their religion then she would like to apologize. Cardi B made it clear that it was not her intent to disrespect anybody’s religion as she would not like anyone to offend hers.

She also admitted that she should have done more research on the concept before agreeing to do it.

“I wasn’t trying to be disrespectful… I can’t change the past, but I’m going to do more research for the future,” Cardi B added.

Footwear News Issues Apology After Cardi Backlash

It was not only Cardi B who apologized. Footwear News also issued an apology statement on their Instagram on November 11.

They wrote, “Yesterday we posted content from our exclusive Cardi B cover shoot. One of the images was intended to pay homage to Hindu goddess Durga, and our intent was to show a powerful woman.”

They continued saying they realize they were not considerate of certain cultural and religious perspectives. And of how this could be perceived as deeply offensive. Footwear News then took full accountability for the Cardi B fiasco and offered their apologies.
