Joe Biden already has the most votes ever in US Election History!
We still don’t know who has won the 2020 US Elections. However, looking at the popular vote, Joe Biden has already won the most votes ever in US Election history! That is a major milestone, thanks to the incredible voter turnout and the American population being at an all-time high.
Joe Biden wins record number of votes in the 2020 US Elections!
As of right now, Joe Biden has gathered more than 71 million votes, which is a record in US history. The record last belonged to former President Barrack Obama, who got more than 69.5 million votes in his 2008 win. Moreover, with 70 million votes, Biden also won 50% of the popular vote, whereas Donald Trump is at 48% of the popular vote, which is 68.1 million votes.
Such a surge in the total number of voters in the 2020 US Elections is because of the high voter turnout. At least 159.8 million voted in this election, according to NBC. That is the highest turnout since 1900, and that is despite the Coronavirus pandemic and COVID-19 restrictions. And Joe Biden paid a tribute to those voters in a speech too. He said:
Yesterday once again proved that democracy is the heartbeat of this nation. Here the people rule. Power can’t be taken or asserted. It flows from the people, and it is their will that determines who will be the president of the United States and their will alone.
Why winning the most votes still doesn’t mean you the Presidency?
A big reason for such a massive turnout in the 2020 US Elections might also be the mail-in-ballots, with a record number of Americans using that method of voting for the first time. Despite winning the popular vote by a fair margin, the Electoral College may still not let Joe Biden win the Presidency. The electoral college favors states with less population, giving their vote more weightage than those in the big states, like California, New York, and Texas. Therefore, in America, one man is not equal to one vote. And many people lay the blame for such an unequal electoral system on slavery and how it favors southern White voters.
That is one of the main reasons why many Democrats want to get rid of this system and decide the President by popular vote. What do you guys think? Should the United States persist with the electoral college or should it be made redundant? Let us know in the comments below.
