Matthew McConaughey is the reason Jennifer Garner Never Quit Acting
The year was 2013, and Jennifer Garner was pretty much done with acting. She was ready to quit the industry as she was filming Dallas Buyer’s Club. However, it was because of the “sweet” Matthew McConaughey that she ended up completing the film and did not quit acting.
The Alias star has worked alongside Matthew McConaughey in Ghosts of Girlfriends Past and Dallas Buyers Club. Jennifer Garner revealed that her career became her second priority for a period of time when she had three children with ex-husband Ben Affleck. Even though she never retired, she was not committing to as many projects as before. But then, came the chance to work in Dallas Buyer’s Club, alongside Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto.
While talking to Kelly Corrigan in a PBS interview this week, she talked about her role in Jean-Marc Vallée-directed biopic. At the time, she had spent quite some time away from Hollywood, as she said:
My agent called me and said, ‘We’re either having a conversation about you taking this movie or your retirement’.
How Matthew McConaughey helped Jennifer Garner in taking care of her baby
However, while filming the movie, Jennifer Garner had a lot of challenges to overcome. The most important one of them was to mother feed her nine-month-old third child. The 21-day shooting schedule was extremely hectic. Moreover, McConaughey and Leto had also lost a lot of weight to play characters. Garner recalled a particularly difficult day of shooting on set, saying it was time to feed her baby:
It was bedtime and we were doing some scene that was supposed to be light and I started crying and I was like, ‘I have to quit. I have to go home and be with my kids. I just can’t do this anymore’. Sweet Matthew McConaughey pulled me aside and said, ‘What is going on with you?’
Jennifer Garner was trying to hold back her tears as she was recalling this story. She proceeded to tell McConaughey her entire ordeal, who then told the entire crew that Garner needed to go to the bathroom for a while. From then on, whenever Garner needed to feed her child, she would “give him a high sign and I would go take care of it”. She recalled how McConaughey told her:
You can do both. You’ve got it, you can do it.
And that is how Mathew McConaughey prevented Jennifer Garner from quitting in the midst of one of the most important films of her career.
