Benedict Cumberbatch improvised the most important scene in Avengers: Endgame
Let’s face it – even after one year, we’re not completely over Avengers: Endgame. Just the idea of such a colossal project and its perfect ending sounds absurd. But, Marvel did it. And they did it incredibly well. What made the movie incredible were some iconic moments. However, did you know that arguably the most important scene in Endgame was improvised by Benedict Cumberbatch? Yes, it really happened and it just made the scene more heartbreaking.
The iconic scene from Endgame which was an improv by Benedict Cumberbatch
Remember the scene where Doctor Strange looks at Iron Man, holds his finger, indicating that this is the one chance that he was talking about in Avengers: Infinity War. However, that scene where he lifts his finger to indicate that without saying a word, that was improvised! Scott Derrickson, who was the director of Doctor Strange, made the revelation, and the fact that it was Benedict Cumberbatch who came up with that improv. Derrickson quote-tweeted a GIF of that scene, saying:
Benedict told me this moment was an improv.

As we all know by now, the raised finger meant the “one way” to beat Thanos was to take all the infinity stones and use it to kill Thanos and his army. But, to do that, Tony Stark had to die. And seeing Tony Stark take his last breath as he saved all of humanity was the perfect end to his wonderful character. But, it’s that finger that truly made that scene iconic. It would have been empty without Benedict Cumberbatch’s finger. It truly shows how he understood the scene and what it demanded of him, and the fans in the replies appreciated that.
One fan tweeted:
As if we needed any more proof that Benedict was a Grade A actor.
Another fan also tweeted how emotionally charged the raising of the finger was, saying:
you can tell him it might be the most emotionally charged single finger in cinematic history, his and ET’s.
Doctor Strange is still an important part of the MCU
We’re lucky to have seen Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange. This is because initially, Marvel also considered Jared Leto, Ethan Hawke, Ryan Gosling, Joaquin Phoenix, Matthew McConaughey, Colin Farrell, and Jake Gyllenhaal for the role of Strange. Thankfully, they landed on Cumberbatch, and the rest, as they say, is history. Luckily for us, Benedict Cumberbatch’s journey as Doctor Strange in the MCU is far from over. Marvel confirmed Doctor Strange 2, and there is a significant chance that Strange will have a role to play in the upcoming Disney+ show WandaVision and Spider-Man 3. So, we’re extremely excited to more of his brilliance and improv!
