Cate Blanchett Defends Straight Actors Playing Gay Role

0 712

For quite some time now, there has been an ongoing controversy over straight actors playing gay roles. And it was almost time that someone from Hollywood spoke up over it. Finally, Cate Blanchett has voiced her support defending these straight actors who play the gay characters. And is determined to continue fighting for the right to suspend this disbelief. Considering the conditions in Hollywood lately, it seems like the journey for Cate Blanchett is going to be pretty rough. But will the actress succeed in changing this belief is the real question here.

Previously, Hollywood received major criticism for allotting gay roles to straight actors. In fact, Scarlett Johansson stepped down from playing a transgender character in July following the public backlash. However, Cate Blanchett has herself played a lesbian woman in her 2015 movie Carol. And disagrees with the idea that a straight actor can not perform a gay role because they can’t form a deep bond with the character unless they have shared experiences. Blanchett believes that this idea defies the entire point of acting.

Cate Blanchett’s Defense

While talking to the Hollywood Reporter, Cate Blanchett claimed that she will fight to death to suspend the disbelief and play roles that go beyond her experience. She said that reality television has an extraordinary impact on the way the audience views the creation of a character. She further said that,

I think it provides a lot of opportunity, but the downside of it is that we now, particularly in America, I think, we expect and only expect people to make a profound connection to a character when it’s close to their experience.

Apart from Cate Blanchett, Sir Ian McKellen is among the ones who criticize Hollywood’s attitude towards gay actors. Straight actors have been winning Oscars for playing gay roles. But no openly gay man has ever won an award for it. As a whole, 52 straight people have been nominated for Oscars for their gay roles.

Let’s see how it goes for Cate Blanchett in the industry now!
