Lauren Graham Almost Wasn’t On Gilmore Girls
There is no amount of praise that can ever do justice to the masterpiece that was Gilmore Girls. It introduced us to a mother-daughter duo (played by Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel) as we had never seen before. Consuming unthinkable amounts of coffee and endless junk food seemed like no big deal for neither the Gilmore Girls nor the GG fans.
Then the show ended. There was a Netflix revival though. However, every OG Gilmore Girl fan wishes it had never been made.
Twenty years after the show first premiered, you can be sure to find an episode for every kind of mood.
But what if Gilmore Girls was not the masterpiece it is today? Can you imagine anyone else playing the characters we love so dearly? And more specifically, can you picture anyone else playing the role of our beloved Lorelai Gilmore other than the super talented, Lauren Graham?
Neither can I!
However, Lauren Graham almost did not play the role of Lorelai Gilmore.
How Lauren Graham Became Lorelai Gilmore
“When I got the script for the Gilmore Girls pilot, I was in New York, staying in a friend’s studio apartment. Waiting to hear if the series I just completed for NBC — Don Rooses’ M.Y.O.B.—was going to be picked up for a second season or canceled,” Lauren wrote in her 2016 book, Talking As Fast As I Can: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls (and Everything in Between).
A surprise blessing for Lauren, M.Y.O.B. did not get picked up. This allowed Lauren to move on to other projects and play Lorelai in Gilmore Girls, a role that was good for any other actress in consideration as well.
“There’s a sort of manic recognition that happens very rarely when I read something that I want so much that I go briefly but totally bonkers,” Lauren explained while talking about the connection she made to her character after reading the script. “That feeling is a combination of ‘Hello, old friend,’ meets EVERYONE GET OUT OF MY WAY SHE’S ALL MINE.”
