In HBO’s The Wire, Jimmy McNulty was never someone known for his nuance before he spoke. Well, it looks like the actor who portrayed McNulty, Dominic West, is a lot like his character too. In a recent interview, he admitted that he almost leaped in “the air with joy” when he heard of Donald Trump’s COVID-19 diagnosis.
Dominic West was happy that Donald Trump contracted COVID-19
West recently appeared on ITV’s breakfast show Good Morning Britain. There, they asked him what his immediate reaction was when he found out that the U.S. President contracted the Coronavirus. West said:
I did slightly leap in the air with joy. He said it is what it is, and I think the phrase is what goes around comes around. I just hope it doesn’t interfere with him being elected out of office, that’s all.
It was a bit shocking for the hosts to hear someone leaped with joy over such news. So, one of the hosts Kate Garraway asked Dominic West once again, hoping that he would walk back on his remark. She asked:
I’m sure you wish him personally all the best, but you subscribe (to the idea) there’s an element of karma in all this?
To that, Dominic West replied:
There’s an element of schadenfreude in all this, I suppose. I’m not a fan of his, as you can probably tell, I just hope Biden stays healthy and gets the presidency as quickly a possible. I think Trump is a catastrophe for America and the world.
As you may know, schadenfreude is German for deriving pleasure from someone else’s misfortune. You can watch the clip of the interview below:

Dominic West is currently filming BBC/Amazon’s period drama The Pursuit Of Love and is working on Sky’s Brassic. However, he will always be known as Jimmy McNulty to anyone who has watched The Wire, which is quite simply one of the greatest shows ever made. But, West was not the only one to have expressed some sort of joy over Donald Trump and his direct encounter with COVID-19.
Other celebrities gave mixed reactions too
Apart from Dominic West, Tyler Oakley, Zach Braff, and B.J. Novak also laughed at Donald Trump, especially because of the way the US President dealt with the Coronavirus. With over 213,000 dead, the United States has the highest death toll from the virus. As a result, many celebrities and people, in general, are not as sympathetic to the President as they would normally be.
