Zendaya makes history at the 2020 Emmys Awards. The 24-years old actress left everyone’s mouth open by winning the lead-actress-in-a-drama award. It was a surprising win for the young star. As she overcame a group of very strong nominees like Jennifer Anniston, Laura Linney, Olivia Colman, Sandra Oh, and Jodie Comer.

Is Zendaya the first Black woman to win an Emmys for the category?
Zendaya is also the second-ever Black woman to get the award in the category after Viola Davis who won it in 2015. Zendaya won the best actress Emmys award for her character in HBO’s teen drama “Euphoria”.
The actress’ name is going in the history books as she is the youngest winner ever in her category. Delivering her acceptance speech in her home surrounded by her joyful family and holding tightly the Emmy in her hand was delightful to watch. Zendaya specially thanked Euphoria’s show creator and director Sam Levinson. Levinson centered the drama on his own struggle with drug addiction.

Euphoria is a colorful look at the lives of anxious, longing youngsters on a path of self-discovery that happens to include lots of s*x, drugs, and emotional turmoil. Euphoria is a raw and captivating drama about Rue’s life. Rue (played by Zendaya) is a high school student trying to recover from drug addiction and return to her normal, healthy life.
On the 28th of July 2020, when the 2020 Emmy nominations were announced. The greatest shocker was when Zendaya landed her first career Emmy nomination. The 24-year-old actress received a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Kudos to her work in Euphoria. The high school drama broadcasted its very first season back in the summer of 2019. So, very few Emmy experts had “Euphoria” or even Zendaya on their radar for the 2020 Emmys Awards. Luckily, the show proved to be a buzz-worthy hit with audiences. Zendaya’s character also proved to be of immense significance.
Nominations and prizes for Euphoria
The drama made a great impression at the Creative Arts Emmys with five of their nominations: Outstanding Contemporary Makeup (Non-Prosthetic), Outstanding Contemporary Costumes, Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics, Outstanding Music Composition for a Series (Original Dramatic Score), and Outstanding Music Supervision.
The show won awards for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics. Thanks to Labrinth’s “All of Us” from the season finale and “Salt the Earth Behind You.” Moreover, the series also won awards for Outstanding Contemporary Makeup.
To be precise, “Euphoria” has now given HBO more Emmys Awards wins than “The Leftovers” and “The Wire” combined.
