The Fresh Prince of Bel-air gets a reboot. Only this time it will be dark and gritty. And Will Smith is also on board as a producer which just makes this reboot even better. One film producer, Morgan Cooper, envisioned the story of Fresh Prince in a different way. The vision was so passionate that he ended up making a whole trailer on it. The trailer got to Will Smith who instantly fell in love. And fortunately so did Peacock!
The reimagining of a beloved family sitcom
We all know and love The Fresh Prince of Bel-air. It’s where Will Smith came under the public lenses. The show was revolutionary as it was a typical family show but it centered around a Black family. Although the show was a sitcom and had some of the most hilarious moments on TV, it also highlighted important social issues like police discrimination against African Americans in America.
But wait till you see the dark reimagining of the show. Morgan Cooper, the man behind the idea, brings you ‘Bel-Air’:
The concept somehow works in a dark setting as well. That’s owing to the genius and innovative idea by Morgan Cooper.
Will Smith loved the concept of Bel-Air!
The original Fresh Prince, Will Smith himself also came across the trailer and loved it. He became such a fan of it that he invited Morgan Cooper over to his house to discuss it.
Will Smith shared his thoughts regarding the whole show’s concept:
I moved to LA and started to fresh Prince. And all of my friends started getting killed and going to jail. The escape that I made from it in real life was the escape that Will made in the show. Was I going to be that same statistic or was I gonna do and be something different? What’s exciting to me is the new medium of it all. That you put something on YouTube right. You like just made a trailer created something. I’m excited and inspired about that new way that human beings are interacting and ideas are getting created.
The reboot news was a very exciting one for Will Smith!
Morgan Cooper will direct this new reboot project and be serving as a co-writer and co-executive producer. Moreover, Chris Collins will be the showrunner as well as producing the project and co-writing the script. There is also Will Smith who is going to produce it through Westbrook Studios. Other producers attached to the show are Benny Medina, Quincy Jones, and the original show’s creators Andy and Susan Borowitz. The studio, Universal television, behind ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ is going to also produce this as well.
Peacock gave a two-season order for ‘Bel-Air’. This is something unprecedented as told by Will Smith himself:
I’ve been in this business for 30 years and that does not happen they ordered two full seasons of bel air based on the quality of the pitch and the work that you guys have done so I want to say congratulations.
Will Smith further shared how excited he was to reimagine all the characters on the show in a modern dramatic setting:
You know a real kid from west Philadelphia modern-day a black family. Bel air the Carlton character a black young republican modern-day like that like the heat that would be stirred up between these characters. It’s like what’s the Hillary character in a world of instagram and social media.
This is definitely going to be something truly exciting as we will get to see these characters in a new light. A new perspective will be surprising and entertaining for the viewers!
