Arnold Schwarzenegger Offers to fund polls to increase voter turnout

Arnold Schwarzenegger is not only known for being the actor in Terminator but also the former Governor of California. So, he’s got a political past as well. That explains why he’s so passionate about having as big a voter turnout as possible. So much so that he is ready to fund for more polls in order to increase the voter turnout.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, a former Republican Governor against Trump, has always been passionate about fair voting practices

Most of Hollywood is liberal and has leftist views and support the Democrats against Donald Trump. But Arnold Schwarzenegger was a firm Republican when he was appointed a Governor. Though, there are still many Republicans who are even against Donald Trump and his actions. Same is the case with the Commando actor.

Arnold also had his own unique feud with President Donald Trump. It all started when Schwarzenegger replaced Donald Trump in the show ‘The Celebrity Apprentice’. After the replacement, the show became ‘The New Celebrity Apprentice’. The show’s ratings did stall after the Terminator actor starred in it which led to Donald Trump taking a dig at the actor and telling people to ‘pray for him’. To this Arnold Schwarzenegger replied:

“I wish you the best of luck and I hope you’ll work for ALL of the American people as aggressively as you worked for your ratings.”)

But that isn’t the only issue he had with Donald Trump. Arnold Schwarzenegger called Trump out when he was racist against four women of color working in the Congress:

The Trump administration, for some reason, is hellbent on reversing decades of history and progress. Whether it is political pettiness, shortsightedness or just plain jealousy, I couldn’t tell you. I can tell you that it’s wrong. It’s un-American.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is also adamantly against partisan gerrymandering (that is the controversial and oftentimes illegal practice of ‘redrawing the lines of a congressional district’ to give a particular political party an unfair voting advantage over another. This practice has increased more as it’s easier to know the exact locations of where the Republican and Democratic voters reside in.

“It’s the politicians that are looking for voters, rather than the voters picking the politicians … It took 200 years, but people are finally waking up to this scam.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger even supported the formation of an independent redistricting commission in 4 States. Moreover, he also started the Fair Maps Incubator organization in 2018 that fights gerrymandering to ensure fair voting practices.

His efforts to ensure fair voting in 2020

Even in 2020, he is doing everything he can to increase the voter turnout. The Terminator actor has shared that the States that are closing the polling stations usually do so to deprive minority voters the right to vote and then simply blame this on budget restrictions. And Arnold Schwarzenegger proudly states that if it is in fact about budgetary restrictions, he himself is willing to ensure there are no budget problems. Doing this means that there would be no excuse for certain people to disenfranchise minority voters.

Arnold Schwarzenegger was responding to a Reuters story on Twitter. The Reuters story shared that more than a thousand polling stations have shut down in America between 2016-2020 under the Trump administration.

Furthermore, he elaborated:

This is a serious question. Is closing polling stations about making it harder for minorities to vote, or is it because of budgets? If you say it’s because of your budget, let’s talk.

What do the experts say about Arnold’s proposed solution?

The experts weigh in on the solution that Arnold Schwarzenegger has put forward. They are skeptical and don’t think that only money would solve the systematic issue of voter suppression.

One expert on voter suppression, journalist Greg Palast, shared with ComicBook:

The big problem is that we don’t have poll workers. Most poll workers, three quarters of all poll workers, are over 60, and so we lose the poll workers. That’s why Milwaukee’s primary this year went from 180 polling stations to five. They simply didn’t have poll workers. It’s not a question of not having money to keep polls open, it’s a question of not having poll workers, and what we need is to have young, healthy people to say ‘I’ll do it.'”

Palast also talked about how someone like Schwarzenegger could definitely help raise awareness of voter suppression and ensure the election is more honest. However, mail-in and absentee voting is going to be crucial for the American 2020 Presidential election. Hence, the poll workers need to be working longer hours too:

“It may help if Schwarzenegger says if you agree to work at the polls, I’ll give everybody 100 bucks and links to all my films for free or something. It’s going to be a minimum vote counting process, and we’re going to need poll workers for two weeks, not for a day and not for a night. So obvious, the issue is, you can pay to keep polls open but that’s not in question. The states have the polls, they don’t have the poeple. What does it take to get young people to do something?”
