Who Is The Best Batman Hollywood Has Ever Produced?
Batman is one of the most iconic superheroes of all time. Even after earning billions of dollars, Batman can still go toe to toe with any Marvel hero. However, unlike most of Marvel’s heroes, many actors have played the role of the caped crusaders over many past decades. This often leaves fans a bit confused as to which version of Batman is really the best we ever got on screen? Well, we’re here to help you answer that question.
Top 5 Batman actors of all time!
5. Ben Affleck
This is a tricky one. The thing about Ben Affleck’s Batman is that he actually did a very decent job. The only problem was with the script. For the sake of sanity, we will not be diving into Justice League. Needless to say, that movie was a disaster. Instead, we’ll be focusing on Affleck from Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice.
There wasn’t any problem at all with Ben Affleck in that film. In fact, he did exactly what the script demanded of him. His performance as an old and cynical version of Batman was just what the character demanded. The problem was that Zack Snyder did not truly understand what Batman stands for. Batman should not be going off and shooting down terrorists with an assault rifle. Batman should not be killing people mercilessly without any regard for human life. He has every right to be a badass and beat down any criminal he likes. But taking a life is against everything that Batman stands for.
However, taking into consideration what Ben Affleck was given in the script, he did as good a job as anyone could do. And for that, he at the very least deserves to be in the top 5 Batman actors of all time. Thankfully, he understood what being a billionaire by day and a vigilante by night means. That is why Affleck reprised the role in the upcoming DC movie The Flash. And he only decided to rejoin DC after his demands were met. We hope to see him in this role one last time and in a good way!
4. Michael Keaton
Believe it or not, Michael Keaton’s casting as Batman caused far more outrage at the time than Robert Pattinson’s or anyone else’s hiring did. At the time, Keaton was known as a comedic actor before being cast by Tim Burton in the 1989 Batman film. Before that, he was famous for his work on Beetlejuice, where Burton met him and was impressed by his talents. Clearly, he saw something in Michael Keaton that the audience and comic book fans at the time couldn’t see. And he delivered.
Michael Keaton was a perfect fit for the caped crusader and Bruce Wayne at the time. Remember, comic book heroes and their on-screen representation was developing at the time. And Michael Keaton played a big role in DC movies going towards the dark and more gritty side of that universe. Moreover, for many of us, he was the first Batman we ever got to see on screen, and that leaves a very strong impression on a young mind. And it’ll be fun to see him back as Batman in the upcoming DC film The Flash, joining Ben Affleck!
That said, Michael Keaton and Tim Burton’s work on the Batman movie was not based on actual comics. They just made their own stuff up. And it was fine for the time. Because one can say the audience was not ready to see what real comic book stories would be like. And that’s okay.
3. Will Arnett
The Lego Batman Movie my very own personal favorite Batman movie. In fact, this is the comfort movie that I watch whenever I’m feeling down and low. This movie understands Batman way better than any Batman movie that has ever come to existence.
The Lego Batman Movie completely reinvented the idea of telling a Batman story. They remained faithful to the character, showing how he is always lonely without a family, has problems with his love life, thinks very highly of himself, and is kind of a snob. But, they do it in a lighthearted way and present a unique version of Batman with a unique story. Moreover, you can literally find every single villain Batman has ever faced in his life. And to top it off, it has a TON of pop culture references in it. You will love it. And Will Arnett played a massive role in its success.
Will Arnett was the perfect person to explore the vulnerable and human side of Batman in this movie. He helped us explore Batman’s relationship with Alfred, who is like a father to him. It even dives deep into Batman’s relationship with the Joker, and how he underappreciated him all this time. After all, the Joker made him complete. He is the mirror opposite of Batman, remember? Well, in this movie Joker only ever wanted to be appreciated. And then there’s Robin, his surrogate son who tries to be as close to him as a son, but Batman pushes him away at every corner. You also have Barbara Gordon as his love interest, and Batman was so petty around him whereas Barbara was headstrong! It was nice to see DC show a lighter side of the comics. It doesn’t always have to be dark and gritty.
2. Christian Bale
There’s little doubt that Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy is the greatest superhero trilogy of all time. Batman Begins, Batman: The Dark Knight, and Batman: The Dark Knight Rises are the few critically acclaimed superhero films that you can find on the big screen. There’s nothing I can say that hasn’t already been said.
And any amount of praise that Christian Bale has received for his take on Batman is less than what he deserves. He gave the caped crusader an emotional depth as well as the ruthlessness of his character. But, on top of it all, he showed a love for human life. That just makes him the best Batman we have seen by far on the big screen. However, he is not the best to ever appear on any screen. That title goes to…
1. Kevin Conroy
It’s criminal that not many people know of Kevin Conroy, who spent 25 years giving his voice to the caped crusader. His take of the Dark Knight in Batman: The Animated Series is the best representation of Bruce Wayne and his alter ego on the small screen. Since then, he has voiced Batman in multiple animated series, including Justice League and many other Batman animated series.
Fans who have watched Batman in Kevin Conroy’s animated series also know that you can’t separate the caped crusader from Conroy’s voice. The true fans of the series know the justice he did to Bruce Wayne and the Dark Knight. As a result, he belongs on top of the list of the best actors to have ever played the role of Batman on screen.
What to expect from Robert Pattinson?
There is another actor who is set to show us his take of Batman – Robert Pattinson. When Warner Bros. announced his name, people thought they were joking! The internet couldn’t stop making memes on the Twilight actor, precisely for the reason that his name is associated with the Twilight series. However, those who have followed his career know of how underrated an actor he is. To know his true potential as an actor, you have to watch his recent movie The Lighthouse.
