Court papers revealed that Sir Elton John’s ex-wife took an overdose of Valium on their honeymoon at St Tropez. This was after the singer told her “the marriage was not working and that he wanted her to leave”. This was just three days into their honeymoon. Renate Blauel made the claim in her £3 million damages claim against Sir Elton. The claims are based on allegations that Sir Elton John broke their divorce agreement.

The German Sound Engineer married Sir Elton John back in 1984, with the marriage lasting for four years. Ever since, Renate Blauel has kept a low profile, with almost no public appearances until now. However, she filed her legal claim, taking issue with their marriage’s depiction in Sir Elton John’s 2019 biopic Rocketman and autobiography Me. Moreover, these depictions triggered mental health problems for Renate Blauel, according to her claim.

Blauel’s mental health issues

Renate Blauel’s lawyer, Adam Wolanski, also claimed that Sir Elton John knew of her struggles with “depression and anxiety”. Moreover, he was aware that her condition was “exacerbated by press interest in her and by publicity relating to her”. Wolanski cited Blauel’s suicide attempt and frequent panic attacks as proof.

The lawyer mentioned in the papers one such incident. This was when Sir Elton John and his ex-wife hosted a lunch for members of the Royal Family. The documents said:

“During this visit, Princess Margaret asked the claimant about a painting belonging to the defendant. The claimant was unable to recall any details about the painting and this caused her to panic and become very anxious. She interrupted the defendant’s conversation with the Queen Mother to ask for assistance before removing herself to another room. Although she did not explain to the defendant why she had done this, it must have been obvious to him that she had absented herself because of her anxiety.”

Renate Blauel’s legal aid also claimed that as a result of the biopic and autobiography, one journalist tried to locate her in her own village. This caused her a lot of stress and anxiety and had to spend thousands of dollars in therapy and treatment.

Sir Elton John’s legal team responds

In response, Sir Elton John’s lawyer Jenny Afia responded to his ex-wife’s claims with this:

“Elton has always respected Renate’s privacy and will continue to do so. It is well documented that their marriage was completely respectful and the relationship both Elton and Renate had after they divorced continued to be kind, respectful and honourable for the 30 years following.”

She added that she found it “baffling” that Renate Blauel’s case was:

“… centred around privacy when at every stage of these proceedings Renate has chosen to file these claims in the public domain. This only goes to show the true purpose of this claim which is to extract a large sum of money from Elton and tarnish his name publicly with falsehoods.”
