Why Ben Affleck Reprised His Batman Role In ‘The Flash’
Warner Bros. and Ben Affleck did not part ways on good terms the last time. However, it looks like Affleck is willing to give the DC Extended Universe another chance. The actor agreed to reprise his role as Batman in the upcoming DCEU film ‘The Flash’. But, he only agreed to return after they agreed to his demands.
How fans reacted to Ben Affleck’s return as Batman
Back in 2013 when Affleck was announced as the new Batman, the audience’s reaction was mixed. Some were hyped for it, while others made memes about it. Sadly, it did not go as well for him with Batman vs Superman and Justice League. Moreover, his appearance in ‘Suicide Squad‘ did not sit well with fans as well. However, his solo Batman movie could not happen because of personal issues.
At the time, Ben Affleck was going through a divorce from his then-wife Jeniffer Garner. Furthermore, he was also suffering from alcohol and substance abuse. As a result, fans were quite empathetic towards Affleck and he ended up retiring from playing the billionaire Bruce Wayne. Therefore, Matt Reeves eventually cast Robert Pattinson as Batman.
However, the actor got a hold of himself and also found a new love in actress Ana De Armas. Now, Ben Affleck is finally set to return as Batman/Bruce Wayne in DCEU’s ‘The Flash’. And the overwhelming fan reactions have been positive, or at least wild and shocked. But, the real question that arises is why did Affleck reprise the role?
The demands Ben Affleck made before returning in ‘The Flash’
According to reports, Ben Affleck only agreed to rejoin the DCEU and reprise his role after some script changes. Sources say that negotiations began in the last couple of months. However, before committing with Warner Bros. for another film, Affleck “had notes on the script.”
After the demands were met, Ben Affleck got the updated script in mid-August. And finally, the Oscar-winning screenwriter agreed to rejoin DCEU’s project once again. Moreover, Michael Keaton is also set to reprise his role as Batman for the first time since 1992. Both the actors will play Batman, but it is theorized that they’ll either be in separate universes in a multiverse plot. Either that or they’ll be involved in a time travel plot. Either way, the fans are incredibly excited!
What ‘The Flash’ director wants from Batman
In addition to the fans rejoicing, ‘The Flash’ director Andy Muschietti has full faith in Ben Affleck for the role of Batman. He explained:
His Batman has a dichotomy that is very strong which is his masculinity, because of the way he looks, and the imposing figure that he has, and his jawline, but he’s also very vulnerable.
As good as Ben Affleck is at playing Batman, he ultimately needs a good script to be able to show that vulnerability of his. And it looks like the 48-year-old is set for a significant part in ‘The Flash’. Production will begin in 2021, and the movie is set to be in the cinema on June the 2nd, 2022.
