Netflix Drops The Curtain On ‘Patriot Act With Hasan Minhaj’
After six seasons and some incredible hilarious episodes, Netflix is finally giving Hasan Minhaj the ax. Netflix has decided to cancel ‘Patriot Act With Hasan Minhaj’ and the comedian announced that the show won’t be returning for the seventh season.
‘Patriot Act With Hasan Minhaj’ canceled
The comedian made the announcement on Instagram, where he wrote a short tribute to the time he spent working on the show. Hasan Minhaj wrote:
What a run. @patriotact has come to an end. I got the chance to work with the best writers, producers, researchers, and animators in the game. My 2 babies were born and grew up with the show. It’s a time I’ll never forget. Thank you to @Netflix and everyone who watched. I’ll miss the show, but I hear there’s a British guy who has one that is quite similar
‘Patriot Act’ consisted of a total of six volumes and 39 episodes, and covered political and cultural topics with great research and less academic jargon. Recently, Hasan Minhaj covered the effects of COVID-19 pandemic on America and George Floyd’s death as well. Moreover, the comedian also highlighted the racism prevalent in “desi” families as well.
In addition to that, ‘Patriot Act With Hasan Minhaj’ won an Emmy and a Peabody award as well. This was after the show was highly praised in its run between 2018 and 2020. Yet, Netflix still decided to cancel ‘Patriot Act’ after the delayed sixth season.
Moreover, ‘Patriot Act’ gave Hasan Minhaj a lot of exposure, thanks to Netflix’s global reach, as he told Variety:
It allowed me to break out of the cognitive framework of being in the late-night world with multiple Jimmy’s because I was not speaking to the North American audience anymore, I’m speaking to the world. When I’m doing a piece about the elections in the Philippines, or censorship in China, or Indian elections, or Saudi Arabia — there are more people outside of the continental United States that know about that stuff, then people here in the States, know about those issues.
But, why did Netflix end up canceling the one good talk show that they managed to produce?
Why did Netflix pull the plug?
This has always been a problem for Netflix. Before ‘Patriot Act With Hasan Minhaj’, the streaming giants tried their luck with a number of talk shows. These include Chelsea Handler’s “Chelsea,” “The Break With Michelle Wolf,” and “The Joel McHale Show With Joel McHale”. However, all of these failed to last more than a couple of seasons.
Moreover, ‘Patriot Act’ just wasn’t the same after quarantine. The lack of a studio audience just took the glamour away from Hasan Minhaj. However, that was an issue most other talk shows were facing as well. Look at Trevor Noah’s Daily Social Distancing Show, and Stephen Colbert’s Late Show. They all suffered from the same problem. But, Netflix canceled ‘Patriot Act’, whereas the other shows are still up and running.
It might be an issue with Netflix not knowing how to create a long-lasting talk show or sitcom. Recently, YouTuber Captain Midnight also highlighted the same problem with the streaming giant. Therefore, Netflix needs to change its approach to TV shows and understand that there’s a big difference between a movie and television.
