Here’s Why Taylor Swift Is Suddenly Being Political
America's sweetheart becomes enemy of America's President
Taylor Swift has finally voiced her political opinion – much to the surprise of her fans and the displeasure of President Trump. While previously being apolitical and making the mistake of sitting out the 2016 presidential election, Taylor Swift has now realized that the time for staying silent is over. And it might have been for the best because voter registrations actually went up after Taylor Swift’s Instagram post. In the post, she talks about why she doesn’t support Marsha Blackburn and supports Phil Bredesen and Jim Cooper. But everyone might be wondering, why now? Is it because of Kanye West or the fact that US midterms are coming up next month?
Before we delve into the details as to why now, here’s what exactly what went down on the day when America’s sweetheart incurred the wrath of America’s President Donald Trump.
On Monday the 7th of October, Taylor Swift posted a thought-provoking caption on Instagram.
The post began with, ‘In the past, I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now’.
She then went on to outline why she will be voting for Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for the House of Representatives ( both Democrats) in the upcoming midterm elections on the 6th of November.
Taylor Swift Really Doesn’t Like Republican Marsha Blackburn
Taylor Swift had a lot more to say regarding Tennessee’s Republican U.S. Senate candidate Marsha Blackburn’s problematic past. Reading the lengthy and heartfelt Instagram post of Taylor Swift, readers might have been shocked that Marsha Blackburn is someone who is actually against equal pay for women or vote for any bills that would protect women. Not only that, but the candidate also believes that businesses can refuse to serve people belonging to the LGBTQ community. She wins our hearts again by saying that whatever Marsha Blackburn believes in, it’s not what her core Tennessee values represent.
Taylor Swift will be casting her vote in the state of Tennessee on the 6th of November and urges fans to register before the 9th of October so they vote as well.
President Donald Trump Responded because He’s Donald Trump
Twenty-four hours after the American pop star denounced Republican candidate Marsha Blackburn on Instagram, President Donald Trump made a statement regarding her passionate stance. He went on to deny everything Taylor Swift had stated in her Instagram post and went on to give support to the Republican candidate. He also mentioned that he liked the pop star 25% less now. Yes, Donald Trump doesn’t know anything about politics but we can always count on him to give us percentage numbers of his favorite pop stars. We all know he loves Kanye West.
Bringing us into answering the question of why Taylor Swift chose this time to become political and not in the 2016 presidential election.
Kanye West Is the Reason?
Everyone might be wondering, what the rapper has to do with the political stance of the pop star. But it might have everything to do with it. We all know the beef that existed between the two. If you’re forgotten, let us give you a brief recap. In 2009, when Taylor won a VMA award, Kanye West interrupted her acceptance speech. He tried to apologize but massively failed, so for some reason he took the apology back and released a controversial song “Famous”. The song had the lyrics “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex/Why? I made that bitch famous/Goddamn, I made that bitch famous” which evidently caused a stir. Taylor’s managing team quickly responded saying that she didn’t give him permission to do that. Basically, bad blood between the two is still pretty much there.
And we know Kanye West is a huge supporter of Trump and his policies. He even gave an SNL speech at the end of the season premiere which caused a huge backlash. So, this might be a major reason why Taylor chose now to start supporting the Democratic candidates she believes in. Because she literally had two whole years to make a political statement.
Or It’s US midterms that Encouraged Taylor Swift
In November, it’s the US midterms and it’s a crucial time for the ever divided country. Every person siding with the left is urging everyone to vote. Celebrities are politically more aware now than ever. We saw that in Alyssa Milano showing her relentless support for Dr. Ford by attending the hearing, Amy Schumer getting arrested for Kavanaugh protests, Jim Carrey‘s redesign of the Time Cover, Kathy Griffin’s controversial video of beheading Trump and the former US President Barack Obama urging everyone to vote. Everyone knows that they can’t stay apathetic and apolitical anymore. The time has come for us to make a change. So what if it took Taylor two years to understand that. She has about 112 million followers on Instagram which probably led to convincing many 18-year-olds to go get themselves registered for voting.
