The Matrix was meant to be a transgender story

Everyone remembers The Matrix as the ground-breaking Sci-Fi movie that created its own genre in the film industry. It brought the world to know and love Keanu Reeves. It was a major pop culture moment that has been the subject of many theories and speculations. One of those has been confirmed by director Lilly Wachowski who says that The Matrix was a trans allegory. Initially, it was meant to be a transgender story.

Lilly Wachowski shares that Hollywood wasn’t ready for a transgender story yet

The movie was directed by sisters Lilly and Lana Wachowski and it starred Laurence Fishbourne, Keanu Reeves, and Carrie-Anne Moss. Lilly reveals that The Matrix was always a trans allegory:

“I’m glad that it has gotten out that (the movie being a trans allegory) was the original intention. But the world wasn’t quite ready yet – at a corporate level, the corporate world wasn’t ready for it.

Further, Lilly elaborates that making movies also means you give the public the freedom to view it in whatever way they want. It’s a ‘public art form’:

I think any kind of art that you put out into the universe, there’s a letting-go process because it’s entering into public dialogue. I like that there’s like an evolution process. That we as human beings engage in art in a non-linear way. That we can always talk about something in new ways and in new light.

Despite it, Lilly and Lana Wachowski’s vision for the movie was coming from a closeted point of view.

Lilly Wachowski is grateful for the movie to still resonate with trans viewers.

Moreover, when Lilly Wachowski spoke on the themes of The Matrix on Netflix’s ‘Disclosure: Trans Lives on Screen’ documentary, she also talked about she’s grateful to help trans people in their journey:

“I love how meaningful those films are to trans people in the way that they come up to me and say, ‘These movies saved my life’. Because when you talk about transformation, specifically in the world of science fiction which is just about imagination, it’s like about world-building and the idea of the seemingly-impossible becoming possible. I think that’s why it speaks to them so much. I’m grateful that I can be a part of throwing them a rope to help them along their journey.”

For trans people, transforming into a completely different gender is something that may have seemed hard to achieve. But movies and stories like The Matrix definitely help in giving them hope. It shows that perhaps the impossible could be possible.

Lilly Wachowski also admits that The Matrix was created from a lot of agitation and anger towards the oppressive structures and system of capitalism. Which definitely oppressed her more as a trans woman.

We’ll see the movie’s directors and cast return with a fourth installment for the movie. Keanu Reeves is returning to Matrix 4 with a great story for viewers.
