According to reports from Variety, show producer Telepictures and distributor Warner Bros. television have sent a memo to the staff of the show that could be worrying for them. The two have engaged WBTV owner WarnerMedia’s employee relations group and a third party firm. However, at this point the name of the third party firm is unknown. They will conduct interviews with current and former employees of The Ellen DeGeneres Show about the workplace culture.

Meanwhile, no one from Warner Bros. Television or The Ellen DeGeneres Show has issued a statement on the investigation. However, this investigation is a result of recent reports that raised concerns about toxic work culture on the show.

This investigation is a result of recent controversies

The past few months saw a number of concerning reports about the Ellen DeGeneres show. In April, there was news that old-time employees were facing pay issues as Ellen DeGeneres continued with the show. The employees received no written communication and faced as much as a 60% pay cut in the middle of the pandemic.

In addition to that, recently Buzzfeed reported that former employees said that “racism, fear, and intimidation” filled the toxic work environment. Buzzfeed’s report was especially concerning the producers, as it indicated a myriad of problems. Executive producers were accused of racist behavior and microaggressions on two female Black employees, especially Ed Glavin. After these troublesome reports, Glavin and fellow executive producers of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Andy Lassner and Mary Connelly gave Buzzfeed a joint statement, saying:

We are truly heartbroken and sorry to learn that even one person in our production family has had a negative experience. It’s not who we are and not who we strive to be, and not the mission Ellen has set for us. For the record, the day to day responsibility of the Ellen show is completely on us. We take all of this very seriously and we realize, as many in the world are learning, that we need to do better, are committed to do better, and we will do better.

If that wasn’t enough, last May a former employee and comedian Kevin T. Porter also exposed Ellen DeGeneres. They revealed that she is a “notoriously mean person”. Nikkitutorials also recalled her unpleasant experience of meeting Ellen DeGeneres too. In light of so many problematic revelations, Twitter is not a big fan of The Ellen DeGeneres Show either.

Twitter isn’t fond of Ellen either

At the beginning of July, there was a #RIPEllen trend on Twitter. It began as a joke by a Twitter user, but eventually caught on as a trend and became a meme! Instead of worrying about Ellen DeGeneres, Twitter got a few good laughs out of the entire ordeal. They would take the picture of any star that slightly resembled Ellen and would tweet their picture with the hashtag #RIPEllen.

The fact that they felt okay making memes of Ellen’s death goes to show how much they dislike her. Perhaps this investigation could shed light on the injustices faced by her employees. If the Ellen DeGeneres show is able to address them properly and fix them, then she might find her place among her fans again.
