There’s no doubt that John Boyega played one of the most memorable roles in the history of Star Wars. Finn had a very prominent in all three of the Disney Star Wars Sequel films. But, Boyega has called curtains on Finn once and for all. However, that leads to the question that why is Boyega no longer interested in Star Wars?
John Boyega tells fans he has “moved on” from Star Wars
Boyega recently shared a picture on Instagram, in which he was working on set while following strict guidelines to avoid contracting COVID-19. A fan commented underneath that:
Force Finn in action with Green lightsaber dressed in black is all I want from the next SW film!
However, Boyega had a straight response ready for such eager fans. And sadly, it was not to his liking. He responded:
lol no thank you. I’ve moved on.
When another fan commented that Boyega “really just got those Disney bucks and dipped”, he responded:
nope. Not into playing one role for too long. I have more to offer than that. That’s all.
That’s a very legitimate explanation for anyone to not stick around a multi-billion dollar franchise. And it shows real intent on behalf of John Boyega for showcasing his acting skills. But, is that all there is to this decision of his?
Why is he not interested in playing Finn anymore?
It’s a very strong reason for John Boyega to leave the Star Wars franchise, especially when he has a lot of work lined up. Currently, he has one TV series (Small Axe) and three movies (Naked Singularity, Rebel Ridge, and Borderland) in works. But there’s more to it than that. And it may have to do with how the creators handled Finn as a character.
The thing about Finn in Star Wars: The Force Awakens was that he was the best character in the film. Just imagine how awesome it was to see a Storm Trooper realizing the evils of The First Order and abandoning them, and then embarking on a journey to fight selflessly for The Resistance. But that’s the thing, he did not undergo any more character development than that in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. And that would not sit well with a great actor like John Boyega.
In the Last Jedi, he underwent the same arc as he did in The Force Awakens. And in the Rise of Skywalker, Finn had countless love interests throughout the film, without any major realization and character development throughout the film. And Boyega did voice his discontent about that in public, although he was very subtle about it. He told The Hollywood Reporter:
I liked the idea of these characters being challenged and separated and stressed, like everyone’s just trying to get to each other – that excited me… But I will be honest in saying I think that they could have done better with it, especially with Finn and Rose [Kelly Marie Tran].
Therefore, despite having greater ambitions, John Boyega may have felt discontent over how Finn was treated as a character by JJ Abrams and the creators at Lucasfilm and Star Wars. But, there’s more to life than movies for John Boyega, as the actor has vocally and physically supported the Black Lives Matter movement as well.
