Audrey Wells, Writer Of ‘The Hate U Give’ Dies Before Movie Premiere
On Thursday, Audrey Wells- the screenwriter for The Hate U Give lost her long battle with cancer. Wells dies at the age of 58. And unfortunately, just a day before her movie premiered. Audrey Wells adapted The Hate U Give from the 2017 novel by Angie Thomas. And it personified the #MeToo movement by narrating the story of a teenage girl who experiences the death of her friend firsthand. Audrey Wells translated this story onto screen in a new movie which starred Amandla Stenberg. But probably what we all regret is that the talented writer could not struggle with cancer just another day to see her work reach the audience on the big screens.
In a statement, Audrey Wells’ husband Brian Larky shared that his wife had been battling cancer for the past 5 and a half years. And she died surrounded by love. He said that even when she struggled with her illness, she never stopped traveling, working or living. And neither did she lose her wonder, joy and optimism. He claimed that Audrey Wells was the perfectly unimaginable wife and partner. And that she knew she was loved by him and her chosen family. Apparently, Audrey Wells recently told her husband that they were lucky. Just because they got to live a love story that not many people do. Brian Larky said that they will surely carry her forward with them always. And in all her roles as a mother, wife, artist, creator and friend. He concluded by saying that she was irreplaceable.
Apart from The Hate U Give, Audrey Wells scripted films like The Truth About Cats and Dogs, George of the Jungle, A Dog’s Purpose and Under the Tuscan Sun. Another animated film- Over The Moon was penned down by Wells. And is currently under production with Netflix. She also made remarkable earnings at Box Office with her collaborations with Disney on family films George of the Jungle in 1997 and The Kid in 2000.
Audrey Wells continues to do good even after her death. Instead of flowers, her family has suggested making donations to nonprofits like The Feminist Majority Foundation. And the American Civil Liberties Union and Planned Parenthood.
